We were recommended Rachamankha by a good friend who has visited every year for the last 5. We were not disappointed and the bar was set high. Paul Walker the hotel GM runs a tight ship and glides his way from guest to guest with effortless calm doling out great recommendations and advice on how to plan your day. Nothing is too much trouble. The hotel is beautifully decorated with a mix of modern and traditional - there are Thai antiques and art everywhere (the owner is a very charming and avid/ discerning collector). The staff were immaculately turned out, helpful, friendly and efficient. Breakfast was superb in the court yard with an open fire to keep off the morning chill, the courtyard for breakfast sums up Rachamankha for me, that of calm contemplation, aesthetics and relaxation. We had a wonderful stay and are looking forward to going back!

Another gushing review of this hotel is probably not needed, but here goes. The hotel complex is amazing - tranquil and beautiful, it's soothing just to walk through the doors. This hotel is large but tucked away. During my three-night stay I found it hard to locate when walking back to it, almost every time. It is in the southern part of the old city.

My room was very comfortable and well-appointed, with old furniture, a comfortable bed, large but simple bathroom. The next-door neighbour's crowing rooster was a charming touch to remind one of being in Thailand, and he didn't seem to wake up too early. There was almost no noise at all from the street. The pool area is very nice, with little Thai squirrel-like creatures gambolling in the trees above the sunbeds. There is a classic library room tucked away in the complex as well. Dining and bar areas are both lovely and classy, but very quiet when I was staying.

Breakfast buffet was plentiful, service excellent.

My two criticisms would be:
That the service is a little too discreet - once I checked in I really had to seek out people if I had questions. The reception is in its own building, so one doesn't walk past anyone to speak to on the way in and out. For a five-star experience I'd expect a little more interaction from people on the desk. And:
The piped music in public areas of the hotel, which is my pet hate. Even a well-chosen mix of music can include some real clangers. At Rachamankha the management has mixed together some traditional Thai music (no problem there), some lighter popular fare (OK) and then some classical operatic hits (please no). To sit down to breakfast in northern Thailand while some tenor is delivering a Puccini aria, even at a discreet volume, was somehow jarring to the nerves and did not fit with the unique setting of this hotel.

But on the whole, highly recommended as a hotel in this great Thai cultural city.

My son and his partner knew I love Rachamankha Restaurant and know that I have always wanted to stay a night to complete the Rachamankha experience. So they booked us in as our Christmas present. It was superb. The room was spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and spacious. Slept very well in the comfortable bed and the linen was so soft. Just fabulous.
Wandering around the beautifully kept gardens made me wish I was a better gardener. The pool was inviting but I did not get to have a swim as I had an excellent massage and enjoyed the ambiance of being poolside. I wanted to stay for longer in the library, but no time. Next time I will for sure. The staff are very helpful and I love their smiles. We had friends join us for dinner, it was excellent as usual. I made sure I had several of my favorites. 100 +% satisfaction!
I live in Chiang Mai but I think I will have to come in and stay more often as a treat to me.

To echo many other reviews, the architecture of the Rachamankha was simply stunning, but the wow factor ended for us there.

This is a '5 star' hotel at $200USD per night; a relatively modest sum of money for a hotel room in the west, but in Asia, this is expensive. Beyond the aesthetically pleasing nature of the hotel, we could not understand where the added value was in the extra 400-500% we spent staying here as opposed to a solid 3 star hotel.

Our bedroom was pleasant but very tired looking. The bathroom in particular was disappointing and could do with an update. The hotel was very quiet, to the point that there was no atmosphere. This was a shame particularly as we were staying over the main Christmas period, which brings me on to my next point.

From what we saw of other customers, the hotel's customer base were overwhelmingly western and yet beyond 6 wreaths hanging in the windows of the restaurant, the hotel was not decorated, compared to pretty much every other hotel In Chiang Mai, adorned with lights and Christmas trees.

Breakfast was a pleasant affair, a wide selection to choose from, from the buffet table, however the muffins were rock hard stale and when I ordered eggs with sausage, the sausage presented on my plate was a naff frankfurter. This is not the quality of food for a 5 star hotel. Similarly the small touches which you would expect to pay for such a hotel were missing.

The airport is a 5km, ten minute drive away, costing around 200baht in a taxi and yet the hotel quoted me 450baht for a transfer (I refused to pay this price and we agreed on 300baht). In a 5 star hotel I would expect this to be complimentary, particularly when the drive is so short. Room service was another issue. When I eventually got through to someone, I spoke with a member of staff who spoke next to no English and was told the only item of food I could order was fried rice (the room service menu had a number of sandwiches and burgers which for some reason were off limits to me but this wasn't explained why).

The questionable quality of food at breakfast, the issues with room service, the lack of English spoken by many members of staff and the thieving nature of overcharging a customer for a service way above market price are the hallmarks of a much lower standard of hotel than this alleged 5 star establishment. Yes the buildings were nice to look at, but I don't think that justifies the price here and I will spend my money elsewhere when I return to Chiang Mai.

This is an excellent boutique hotel. The hotel is located in what looks like historic Thai buildings with high ceilings and simple architectural details. The rooms and the common areas have been designed by a professional (the owner) and it is a tranquil place within a busy city outside the sites walls. The staff is there to help and their recommendations for tour guide services, restaurants, and things to do around the city are top notch. The pool is a great place to relax after a busy day and their restaurant is five star. The breakfast and service was very enjoyable each morning. Check it out!!!!

Room tip: If traveling with a group book a suite and have a living room and a private courtyard.
