Having never stayed in Kathmandu we were delighted to arrive at this palacial hotel. Although, in places, the hotel needed a little updating, the amazing service from ALL members of staff was brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble.
The food in the restaurant was first class.
Sanjita Lama gave me the most amazing spa session, including a facial. I cannot speak highly enough of her, the experience was amazing and much needed after having completed Everest Base Camp. Thank you Sanjita!

Room tip: All rooms are clean and quiet, beautiful grounds

The Shankar is not our usual style of hotel, but a friend recommended the location as a reprieve from the chaos of Kathmandu, and it was that! Our room was large, very clean, a very modern bathroom, outlets on both sides of the comfortable bed, a safe that worked, electricity the whole time of our seven night stay except for a few blips for very short periods of time, TV, two large bottles of water every day and laundry service. None of those things can be taken for granted in Kathmandu, and it’s a credit to the staff that they can deliver that. The internet was mostly pretty strong, but depending on the time of day, only a limited number of devices could be on it at any given time. It was wonderful to be away from the traffic noise and dust. We didn’t use the gardens due to the chilly weather, but I’m sure they are lovely at other times of the year. It is about a 20 minute walk into the tourist center of Thamel. There are usually a few taxis waiting just outside the door, and I highly recommend that you ask for Mr. Bhai Raj Mahayana. We used him one day for a short trip and liked him so much (good English, comfortable car, nice personality) that we booked him several days for other trips around the valley. This would have been a five star rating except for two things. The room rate we booked did not include breakfast and that was an additional $14 per person, which I think is a lot for breakfast. (We walked around the corner to Mike’s Breakfast everyday). Also, while the support staff were nice and friendly, the main manager at the front desk was not friendly at all.

Shanker is a beautiful historic palace located in Lazimpat, nearby good restaurants and just 10 mins walking from Thamel (though, thankfully, away from its noise).
The hotel's style is not the most modern, but that's his charme. Buffet breakfast is fantastic. Staff professional and helpful.
AC/heating and constant hot water are not so obvious in Nepal...but here they are indeed.

We stayed here on the way to and return from Chitwan National Park. It’s a restored palace, now a hotel. Architecture is fantastic. Rooms are big. Facilities perfect for what we were after. One issue we did have though. Before Chitwan we advised reception we would like to check out at 6pm on our return. They said they couldn’t confirm that until we get back. When we checked in again a few days later, asked for 6pm check out. Was told they couldn’t confirm until the day of check out. That day comes and they say no. We tell them again we have a 9.55pm departure and would like the room longer and were prepared to pay. They refused. After some debate, they said we could have 2pm. Not good enough. Fortunately our tour arranger was in the lobby, he spoke to someone else and we got our 6pm checkout.
It really shouldn’t be that hard?
Apart from that, nice place, a bit out of the way by taxis are cheap.

Dear Guest ,
Thank you for your compliments . We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us , except for the late check out bit. We are sorry for the mis understanding and inconvenience that you had to go through. Normally we do allow late departure until certain time period and in a case like yours would have come with an extra cost and depending on the room status for the day . Sorry for the confusion and we hope to see you soon !

Happy travels !!
