I highly recommend renting with Crystal Auto Rental. Their office is right at the airport, just a quick walk across the parking lot. We really appreciated the flip phone they provided. You can load minutes onto it at the grocery store on gas station. I would recommend skipping the grocery store down the street and go to the Puma gas station. The car ran great for our adventures in Belize. If you don't get cell coverage definitiely invest in a map to get around. The car return was also very easy and we really appreciated the shuttle ride to the boat taxi.
I've traveled extensively in Belize and this is the most convenient and cheapest rental car agency I've found. Vehicles are clean and in good condition. Two things: 1. do not take non 4wd off main roads as you will ruin the tires. Most roads in Belize are poor quality and have massive speed bumps, spend the extra money to get a 4wd vehicle. 2. Get the glass insurance, the roads near the airport are under seemingly permanent construction and lots of rocks get thrown up while driving on them. I'm not sure it is possible to drive near the airport without getting glass damage.
Best rental company I've ever used. They were prompt and flexible. Provided transportation to and from the water taxi location. Highly recommend using their services!
We ordered a Chevy Equinox AWD online to pick up at Goldson airport. Not only was it ready for us when we arrived, but we were offered free use of an igloo cooler, as well as a cellular flip phone (can pay to top up anywhere). We had our own GPS, but if you don’t, you definitely need one if you are driving around the country on your own. The staff did not try to upsell us. The car had an “eco” mode that was very fuel efficient, considering gas was nearly $12 Belizean per gallon (cost us about $110 Belizean for half-tank). Would definitely recommend. Only the highways are paved in Belize, and they are not in great shape. Lots of speed bumps whenever you approach a village, so most of the driving is done between 25-45 mph. Our hotels in Cayo and Hopkins were both off unpaved roads. Getting to Cockscomb Nature Reserve is about 6 Miles unpaved road. If you needs a supermarket, stop at Brodie’s in Belize City and/or Belmopan. There isn’t much traffic in the whole country, since gas is so expensive, so once you are out of the city, driving is fairly stress free. Just need to be ready for potholes, gravel, puddles, and one-lane bridges. Puma and Uno gas stations take credit cards BUT most places in Belize only take Visa or Mastercard, NOT American Express. You also need a lot of cash because many tourist venues are either cash-only or charge a surcharge for credit card use. Go make your own adventure, totally worth it.
We had a great experience with Crystal Auto. Their rate was good and they provided a complementary cooler and cell phone while renting the car - both of these came in handy during our trip.
I don't know why someone would choose anyone else!
We arranged a car for 10 days with a toddler car seat. Unfortunately upon arrival, they didn’t have the appropriate size for our son who is 2.5 years old. In the future I will make sure to contact the company ahead of time to ensure they have what we need but they did their best to help and offered other solutions with kindness and good cus
