We had a fantastic time at this resort- the staff was like family by the end of the trip.
Stephanie, the wedding coordinator, was helpful every step of the way. We arrived ~10 days prior to the ceremony, provided our birth certificates, signed the required paperwork, dropped off our wedding outfits/favors, and were able to travel around Belize the week prior-to the wedding.

The resort picks up everyone at the local Ambergris Caye airport in a taxi and brings them to one of the private boats the resort owns, and Mo (the boat driver) will take you to Portofino. Upon arrival it was very nice to be greeted with a rum punch :-)

Every day was fabulous- waking up and walking over to the bar for fresh coffee (and hot tea!) each morning was such a nice treat.
Eco-friendly: there are no little plastic bottles of shampoo and conditioner- all toiletries are in containers in the shower (rustic-style) and everything at the resort is sustainable (no disposable ware).

The wedding itself was great- generally weddings are at 4pm so that the lighting is ideal for photos, and dinner follows around 6pm. We had a tiki bar on the beach and appetizers served while photos were being taken. Dinner was plated and seated- the wedding coordinator will send menu options; we chose a first and second course (we figured after appetizers everyone would be fine with two courses).
Everything we ate at Portofino was fantastic; guests staying at other resorts on the Caye often came to Portofino for lunch and supper.
We blocked out the entire resort about 1 year in advance (my family is loud, lol) for the weekend of the wedding- I highly recommend this if you have more than 35 people attending.

The owner even came out and took some great photos during the wedding- we didn't even see her! She emailed them to me after we had departed.

Overall a great experience- especially for our family and friends!

The Portofino was hands down the best place to relax and celebrate my milestone birthday. Every detail was seen to in the most exquisite fashion imaginable by the entire staff. (Big shout outs to Irene and Captain Moh!)

From the moment we arrived on La Isla Bonita, we felt as though we arrived at our second home. Daniella greeted us at the dock with cool, refreshing, eucalyptus-scented towels and Roberto explained his crew's availability to create any water excursion we desired. We reef fished and snorkeled A LOT.

If you want to relax and have cocktails brought to you at pool side, no problem. If you want to take a golf cart into town or Secret Beach, no problem. If you want to bicycle and explore, no problem. Kayak, no problem. You name it, Portofino will cater to your desires.

We have a new family on Ambergris Caye and cannot say enough about how wonderful our stay was.

My husband and I stayed here for a week for our honeymoon. Everything was absolutely perfect! What made it so perfect was the small touches that the staff did. We would like to thank Irene, Stephanie, Luis, Ivan, Marcelo, Roberto and Chocolate for making this stay wonderful. The staff always went above and beyond to make our stay great. We met the owner the first day that we arrived. She recommended a few activities to do. We did a private tour for the cave tubing and zip lining. We didn’t want to be rushed so we opted this option and Jason was very personable, knowledgeable and funny. We did the Mayan Ruins, which is a bit of a hike to get there, but worth it in the end. 2 days of snorkeling with Chocolate, which was absolutely beautiful. Chocolate was just the best to do snorkeling with. Everyone needs a little Chocolate in their life!

The staff took the time to get to know you and they would tell us about their families, etc. They made great recommendations when we went into town via golf cart. The dirt road does have pot holes, but seriously my husband and I made the best of it by laughing and by seeing who better at avoiding the pot holes. They recommended Secret Beach, Elvis’s Kitchen and the Chocolate store by the public school.

Yes there was seagrass, but the gentleman cleaning it up tried their very best. They were out there when we woke up until about 5-6pm. If you have allergies, it may bother them. Take a Zyrtec and you will be fine. Every where you went had seagrass, but Portofino was by far the cleanest with it.

Yes there are mosquito’s, geckos, crabs, hermit crabs, iguanas, etc roaming the resort. Bring bug spray for the mosquitoes. Let’s face it, you are in the tropics on an island and they were there first.

The resort can not control Mother Nature, so complaining about bugs and the seagrass, come on!

The food at Portofino was fabulous! They gave great portions and it was all fresh. They will also accommodate food allergies. If you like fresh coconut, let the staff know and they will cut down a fresh one for you. Also try the Coco Loco, lobster bisque, almond crusted snapper, lobster tail, grouper, and ribeye. They were our favorites! Everything on the desert menu is wonderful! Stephanie went and got us fruit bread and they prepared it for us and it was delicious! We did the all inclusive for food and drinks. Also, if you leave at 6am for a activity and would like a smoothie(which they are fresh and great) let them know the night before and they will make it happen.

There’s really no words that can describe this place. It was perfect for us. Quiet and relaxing, we went during low peak which was great when we ventured out. We went from Sept 2-8.

We are already looking at our calendars on when we can return!!

P.S Luis and Marcelo, can’t wait for more rum punches and Southern Belle’s with rino’s and bumblebees made from the limes!

Couldn't ask for a more casual, laid back resort. All you need is a bathing suit, sunscreen, sunglasses and flip flops. The staff was truly amazing and everyone was so accommodating. The Cabanas were quaint and in the true Belizian style. We stayed 12 nights, rented a golf cart for a week and took several day tours. Free WiFi, kayaks, bikes, bottled water, great people. The staff was just amazing in booking everything for us. I just can't say enough for the super clean facilities and staff. Thanks Portofino for the vacation we needed and so enjoyed.

Room Tip: All the beach cabanas are great for a couple. The mansions were nice with a full kitchen for more than 2.

We stayed at Portofino for 5 nights at the end of a month long very active trip through Central America so we were mainly looking for relaxation.

If that’s what you’re looking for this is the right place. Here are some things to think about when thinking about coming here

Pluses
The resort is beautiful and the cabanas really nice. Cable Tv Wi-fi across the resort. Comfy beds, lots of space to hang things etc Chairs inside and on the balcony. Nice turn down service with treat every evening

Staff are great and really helpful they make you feel like nothing is too much trouble and to know you by name

Restaurant is nice if a little limited they do their best to be flexible and will happily do food off any of the menus if you ask

Pool is lovely and plenty of beds and chairs

Free kayaks are available to borrow

Amazing diving very close to the hotel so if you don’t want to you don’t have to go far

Considerations
It really is a long way from anywhere and all options are expensive to venture out especially if there are 4 of you - water taxi into town is $11 US each way for each person. You can get a lift with Mo for free if there happens to be a reason he is already doing the journey....in low season that isn’t that often. You can also hire a golf cart from the hotel which is approx $100 a day. Cheaper to hire in San Pedro approx $50 a day While the resort is beautiful on the other side of the road is effectively a mangrove with a lot of mosquitoes (the resort spray daily so they aren’t bad in the actual resort) ....my husband and I went for a walk one day and got eaten alive so venture on foot with a lot of spray

You can’t snorkel directly from the beach ...frustratingly it’s a 10 mins boat ride at a cost of $60 per person .... while this is separate to the hotel again if there’s 4 if you it racks up pretty quick

Sea Grass - not all year although from what I can work out has been here for last 3 months .... nothing the hotel can do and they do their absolute best to keep it clear from the beach but it is an endless battle and very stinky when the tide is out

Overall we enjoyed our time at Portofino as it was primarily relaxation but if you want to be really active or here longer plan your budget accordingly
