My husband and I stayed here for a week for our honeymoon. Everything was absolutely perfect! What made it so perfect was the small touches that the staff did. We would like to thank Irene, Stephanie, Luis, Ivan, Marcelo, Roberto and Chocolate for making this stay wonderful. The staff always went above and beyond to make our stay great. We met the owner the first day that we arrived. She recommended a few activities to do. We did a private tour for the cave tubing and zip lining. We didn’t want to be rushed so we opted this option and Jason was very personable, knowledgeable and funny. We did the Mayan Ruins, which is a bit of a hike to get there, but worth it in the end. 2 days of snorkeling with Chocolate, which was absolutely beautiful. Chocolate was just the best to do snorkeling with. Everyone needs a little Chocolate in their life!

The staff took the time to get to know you and they would tell us about their families, etc. They made great recommendations when we went into town via golf cart. The dirt road does have pot holes, but seriously my husband and I made the best of it by laughing and by seeing who better at avoiding the pot holes. They recommended Secret Beach, Elvis’s Kitchen and the Chocolate store by the public school.

Yes there was seagrass, but the gentleman cleaning it up tried their very best. They were out there when we woke up until about 5-6pm. If you have allergies, it may bother them. Take a Zyrtec and you will be fine. Every where you went had seagrass, but Portofino was by far the cleanest with it.

Yes there are mosquito’s, geckos, crabs, hermit crabs, iguanas, etc roaming the resort. Bring bug spray for the mosquitoes. Let’s face it, you are in the tropics on an island and they were there first.

The resort can not control Mother Nature, so complaining about bugs and the seagrass, come on!

The food at Portofino was fabulous! They gave great portions and it was all fresh. They will also accommodate food allergies. If you like fresh coconut, let the staff know and they will cut down a fresh one for you. Also try the Coco Loco, lobster bisque, almond crusted snapper, lobster tail, grouper, and ribeye. They were our favorites! Everything on the desert menu is wonderful! Stephanie went and got us fruit bread and they prepared it for us and it was delicious! We did the all inclusive for food and drinks. Also, if you leave at 6am for a activity and would like a smoothie(which they are fresh and great) let them know the night before and they will make it happen.

There’s really no words that can describe this place. It was perfect for us. Quiet and relaxing, we went during low peak which was great when we ventured out. We went from Sept 2-8.

We are already looking at our calendars on when we can return!!

-Michelle & Shawn

P.S Luis and Marcelo, can’t wait for more rum punches and Southern Belle’s with rino’s and bumblebees made from the limes!

Couldn't ask for a more casual, laid back resort. All you need is a bathing suit, sunscreen, sunglasses and flip flops. The staff was truly amazing and everyone was so accommodating. The Cabanas were quaint and in the true Belizian style. We stayed 12 nights, rented a golf cart for a week and took several day tours. Free WiFi, kayaks, bikes, bottled water, great people. The staff was just amazing in booking everything for us. I just can't say enough for the super clean facilities and staff. Thanks Portofino for the vacation we needed and so enjoyed.

Room tip: All the beach cabanas are great for a couple. The mansions were nice with a full kitchen for more than 2.

We stayed at Portofino for 5 nights at the end of a month long very active trip through Central America so we were mainly looking for relaxation.

If that’s what you’re looking for this is the right place. Here are some things to think about when thinking about coming here

Pluses
The resort is beautiful and the cabanas really nice. Cable Tv Wi-fi across the resort. Comfy beds, lots of space to hang things etc Chairs inside and on the balcony. Nice turn down service with treat every evening

Staff are great and really helpful they make you feel like nothing is too much trouble and to know you by name

Restaurant is nice if a little limited they do their best to be flexible and will happily do food off any of the menus if you ask

Pool is lovely and plenty of beds and chairs

Free kayaks are available to borrow

Amazing diving very close to the hotel so if you don’t want to you don’t have to go far

Considerations
It really is a long way from anywhere and all options are expensive to venture out especially if there are 4 of you - water taxi into town is $11 US each way for each person. You can get a lift with Mo for free if there happens to be a reason he is already doing the journey....in low season that isn’t that often. You can also hire a golf cart from the hotel which is approx $100 a day. Cheaper to hire in San Pedro approx $50 a day While the resort is beautiful on the other side of the road is effectively a mangrove with a lot of mosquitoes (the resort spray daily so they aren’t bad in the actual resort) ....my husband and I went for a walk one day and got eaten alive so venture on foot with a lot of spray

You can’t snorkel directly from the beach ...frustratingly it’s a 10 mins boat ride at a cost of $60 per person .... while this is separate to the hotel again if there’s 4 if you it racks up pretty quick

Sea Grass - not all year although from what I can work out has been here for last 3 months .... nothing the hotel can do and they do their absolute best to keep it clear from the beach but it is an endless battle and very stinky when the tide is out

Overall we enjoyed our time at Portofino as it was primarily relaxation but if you want to be really active or here longer plan your budget accordingly

We really enjoyed our 10 day stay here at Spring break. We had the top floor of a two story building and it was spacious with plenty of room for hanging out. We didn't cook, but it had and a small kitchenette with mini fridge and hot plate. Portofino is right on the beach and the pool is nicely maintained and just steps away. My son and husband went snorkling twice and said it was the best they have ever seen! They saw every type of fish, corral and sea life that you can imagine! The hotel has a boat and staff member that you can arrange snorkling trips with for a reasonable charge...plus it is just ten minutes to this amazing reef. If you are looking for a lot of nightlife, this may not be the place for you. Things were quiet most nights with people heading to their rooms if the bar was closed early. It was about a 30 minute golf cart ride into San Pedro and along the way there are many restaurants and bars. I wasn't warned that the roads about half way to the hotel change from paved to dirt and there are very big and frequent pot holes. It makes for a rough ride...especially at night as lighting is minimal once you are out of town. Don't miss out on a delicious meal at the hotel; the hotel restaurant is very good. It is a small restaurant, so make a reservation. The bar sometimes is open late and sometimes closes pretty early (depending on the demand). There are always pool chairs available and massages can be arranged beach side. Breakfast was really tasty and certain items on the menu are included in the price of the room. I wish they would consider investing in a good espresso machine and some nice, live music at night would add to the relaxing atmosphere of the bar. The staff was all very friendly and service was excellent. Great stay! Thank you, Portofino!
