Had an amazing time at the Watergate! First time there and plan on bringing my family very soon. Everyone was wonderful. This was a business trip but next will be with family. The history there is amazing. The views of the Potomac are incredible and everything is near by.

Room Tip: The room was spacious and the bed was incredible!

Just got back from a 5 night stay at the Watergate (from there we moved on to the second half of our trip in Charleston). Overall, we enjoyed our stay. If like us you like modern and contemporary design, you will love the decor. Very dramatic and beautiful, especially the lobby area. Our room (deluxe king with balcony) was spacious, with lots of room to relax (including a large leather love seat), and despite the cool rainy weather we loved sitting on the balcony enjoying the view of the Potomac. I loved the electronic pad at the side of the bed to control the lights and temperature - so cool! The bathroom was fabulous with double sinks and an amazing glass enclosure housing both the shower and tub. The room amenities were good as well, with a Nespresso espresso/coffee machine (more on that later) and free bottled water, though I did wish that robes were offered. It’s great that there is an umbrella in the room to use on rainy days exploring DC.

We had dinner at Kingbird our arrival night, to avoid having to go out again after a long day of travel from the West Coast. The food and service were fine, but not worth a special trip. There are so many amazing restaurants in DC that it doesn’t really stack up.

The Next Whiskey Bar was great. We had drinks there nearly every evening. The range of whiskeys on offer is extensive (though other spirits are available for those not into whiskey) and the service is terrific. The patio there is a great place to enjoy a drink and a cigar, so husband was in heaven! The Rooftop Bar was closed intermittently due to rain. We did go up there on our last evening to check it out. The views are wonderful, but we didn’t stay long enough even for a drink as we preferred the Next Whiskey Bar.

I liked the location of the Watergate as well. It is a bit out of the hustle & bustle, but just a brief pleasant walk to the Foggy Bottom GWU metro station to get us anywhere we wanted to go.

Now - Service...overall, service was good to excellent (especially the bellman and folks at the bar). There was one bellman (unfortunately I didn’t catch his name) who took us up to our room at arrival who was especially friendly. He must work a lot, as it seemed like every time we left or arrived at the hotel, he was there at the front with a friendly greeting. The servers and bartenders at The Next Whiskey Bar were both friendly and attentive, as well as knowledgeable in helping us choose new bourbons to try. One late afternoon visit, when I wanted a pot of tea rather than a drink, our server made that happen for me even though they don’t typically serve tea there, by going down to Kingbird and getting me a full tea setup, complete with pot, cup, a small pitcher of warm milk, etc.

However, there were some service glitches - most rather amusing but one not so much, and that was at the worst moment - arrival. Obviously, the Watergate is a luxury hotel, with room rates to match, but I did choose to book an upgraded room. When we arrived, though, the front desk clerk quite assertively tried to get us to upgrade to a one bedroom suite for another $150 a night. I didn’t mind the initial offer, but even after we declined she kept pushing the upgrade even after we declined. It made us a bit uncomfortable to be honest.

The other glitches turned into a running joke for us, and it related to room amenities. Upon arrival, as the bellman showed us around the room, he told us that we could request extra Nespresso pods and bottled water from housekeeping. Our first morning, we realized that extra pods and half & half would be a necessity ( there were only 2 regular & 2 decaf pods) as well as more water (I don’t understand why there would only be one bottle for a double room???). We only got one small coffee each in the room that morning (though luckily there is a to go coffee and tea station in the lobby - complimentary- so I was able to get a cup as we left that morning for sightseeing). As we left, I stopped at the front desk and asked for more Nespresso pods and water to be placed in the room.

Got back to the room late in the afternoon - no extra coffee pods, just the two, and still one lonely bottle of water. Called down, apology, we will send someone right up. I also at that point asked for more half & half as well. Someone comes to the door with coffee pods but no half & half or water. We also ask if we could have a second larger cup (the cups in the room are stylish, but small - one espresso size with saucer and the other about double espresso size with saucer). We just wanted a second of the double espresso size. He comes back with a pitcher of half & half (nice, as we were expecting just more of the little containers) but no cup. Asked about the cup, he said he’d get us one. He comes back with two saucers, but no cups! At this point we gave up (and laughed about it after he left). Never did get the water either.

Next morning, left a note for housekeeping asking for extra coffee pods, half & half, water and a larger cup. Got back to the room about 3:45pm to find it being cleaned. Rather annoyed as we had left at 9am but the room was just being cleaned almost 7 hours later, and we really wanted to relax after walking 6 miles that day sightseeing. However, we didn’t let it show and just went down to the lobby for 15 minutes to wait. When we returned, the housekeeper was finishing up. Asked for a larger cup (again) and housekeeping manager finally brought us one! And there were 4 bottles of water! For the rest of our stay, the housekeeper kept us stocked up with plenty of coffee, half & half, and water, but as you can see, it was a comedy of errors getting to that point!

All in all, a lovely stay at a lovely hotel, and we will definitely stay there again. But I know to be tenacious on the first evening to get the coffee situation in the room resolved ASAP.

Awesome facility and amazing service! And the rooftop views of the city and the Potomac are amazing!! This is the second time that I stayed here, and I was impressed both times. I would highly recommend it for both business and personal travel.
