The first impressions once you have found your way to O-Ku (not thanks to Uber who couldn’t seem to locate the restaurant on our driver’s map) are seriously impressive. From the innocuous (very) door opening into a fantastic space (photo), through the extremely friendly front-of-house team (who managed to get us a table somewhat earlier than our reservation) to an extremely knowledgeable wait staff, everything sets expectations of the forthcoming experience high, very.
It is all the more unfortunate that on our visit the serving staff appeared a bit uncertain and the kitchen team not as bold as we were expecting from an interesting menu combining “traditional” sushi / sashimi with “fusion” / less usual hot dishes, thereby making O-Ku attractive to a diverse range of tastes. We shared our feedback with a genuinely curious and caring general manager and have high hopes for this potentially stunning addition to the Washington dining scene (only one month old as I write this). I look forward to returning in a few months.

Located in one of the not so ideal places in DC but definitely worth visiting.

Cool entrance door and as we went in we were shocked on how different it looked inside. You would never guessed this awesome place exist in that block.

We were literally in awe as we walked to our table and was greeted by their amazing staff.

My fiance had asked about the patio and was initially been told that there would be a wait which we didn’t mind but we’re informed 5mins later that there is a table available for us so we went ahead.

Up there was gorgeous. With the nice weather outside partnered with bulb lights and light music made it so romantic.

They had a few cocktail specials for the night.

Great food choices as well.

Must try:

Wagyu Croquette
ShiuMai
Soft Shell Crab Makimono
Curry Ramen (for those who love spicy food)
Kakuni
Anything from their special Nigiri menu
Chocolate Mousse (probably the best ever!)

We can’t wait to go back!

Jeff Bezos, the owner of Amazon, says missionaries make better products than mercenaries and O-Ku DC embodies that sentiment. With a highly trained, elite staff, every person you interact with at O-Ku is passionate about what they do. Like missionaries, it converts you. I went into O-Ku not a sushi fan and left ready to pick up the sushi flag and travel the world a missionary myself.

O-Ku is more than a Japanese restaurant. It's an escape, an experience away from DC life into a beautiful world where perfection is the goal. O-Ku is in a building near Union Market in between the neighborhood's old stores (halal grill, etc) and new shops (Politics and Prose). Once you get to the beautiful wooden door with a small sign that reads "O-Ku," enter into it's magical world.

The hostess (or three) will greet you. If you have a reservation, you'll be quickly guided to your table. There's two large dining areas on the bottom floor and another dining area with a bar and an outdoor patio overlooking Union Market on the second floor.

My wife, daughter (yes, they have high chairs), and I were seated in the back dining area on the bottom floor by the grill giving us a front row seat to the grilling of all the meats. Our server was friendly, engaging, attentive, and her spacing between dishes was impeccable. Here's what we ordered that were stand outs:

- Cocktails: Each one was excellent. If you like light and sweet, I recommend the Shogun or the Follow the Indigo Road (it has a little kick to it with the serrano). If passion fruit is your preference, order the Typhoon.

- Sushi: The scallop and salmon nigiri were excellent. Quality cuts of meat and presented well.

- Magyu croquettes: Flavorful, tasty and the perfect appetizer.

- Edamame: Perfectly seasoned and a large bowl of it.

- Cucumbers: It's a small side, but the flavors of the oil, vinegar, and sesame seed will keep you ordering more.

- Curry: It's a curry ramen without any broth. The sauce they cook it in is flavorful and not spicy.

- Chocolate mousse: It comes in a block and dense. It's really, really good.

- Water: They give you an option of sparkling or still and once it arrives, a server with a plate of cucumbers, lemon and lime slices stops by to add whichever to your water.

The only item not as amazing (still good, but not a stand out) were the chicken meatballs.

Overall, the experience was excellent and they handled our baby so well. We will be back...after all, we are now missionaries for O-Ku.
