I visit family every year in Maryland and always take the Metro into DC to walk around in town. I've never been inside, however it was the perfect backdrop to the 4th of July fireworks we saw one year.

Try lying on the floor at its base and looking up to the sky, it gives a very different perspective!

We did not get tickets ahead of time and it was a good thing. The monument was closed for repairs 4 of the 5 days we were in DC. But the 5th day reopened and I got in line about an hour or so before the ticket window opened. There was no problem getting tickets and the line moved quickly once the office opened. The view is spectacular and you can go down when you are ready, not just with your tour group. I would not recommend it for severe claustrophobia but should be tolerable for those with mild to even moderate.

Cool monument and surrounding area, but we didn't know you needed to be there by 6:30 am to get free tickets to ride up. They only give out so many a day so be prepared.

Especially nice in March or April when the cherry blossoms bloom. Lots of photo opportunity I ties, and lovely sunny day leisurely promenades. Museums nearby and history around you. Don't miss. Often there are special concerts and events right there.
