Description: In 1999, Estonia's first garlic restaurant, Balthasar, was open in the very heart of the Old Town of Tallinn, Town Hall Square, in the building of Town Hall Drugstore. Balthasar immediately won numerous fans due its unique menu and interior. Wooden interior, characteristic of a medieval building and excellent renovation contribute to the aristocratic atmosphere of the building. An excellent view of the Town Hall Square opens from t he windows of the restaurant.

From starters right through to Garlic icecream desert, just try it and DO NOT prejudge, Great tastes, very attentive service, very broad choice of national delicacies, wine list far too extensive .... but no way you'll not find what you like ... and really historic building. Go for it!!

Balthazar is a traditional restaurant, just off the Town Hall Square. It has an air of slightly faded grandeur and was not busy on a Sunday evening.

I skipped the starters (although tuna or beef carpaccio sounded good) and went for the lamb noisette with parsnip, roasted garlic and green beans (€23). This was disappointing- the lamb was over cooked and tasted of very little; the dish overall was heavy and not very interesting.

I tried the house special for dessert - garlic (!) ice cream with honey and red fruits and a light crisp coconut snap. Beautifully presented and tasty, although rich.

With one small glass of wine the bill was €36.

The food was ok. The service was appalling!.

The waiters were more interested in the TV shows than on anything to do with customers.

Have been there some 15y ago so i decided to give it a go and visit this beautiful still simple restaurant.

The staff is very kind and it makes you feel that you are in an high level fine dinning restaurant. Combining that the view to the main square of Tallinn is very nice specially if there is a sunny day. ( ask for a table at the window )

The starter was pretty good, the sea plate was OK even so a little bit to much vegetable and not so much seafood.

The main plates were really good specially the Steak in the hot stone with the amazing marvelous Madeira wine sauce.

The desserts were really a surprise as their passion fruit sorbet was astonishing :)

I will get back for sure for one more steak like that.

Clearly a very creative chef with food that beat our expectations. The pumpkin soup is honestly the best I've ever had. The salad, lamb and pork mini shank mains were equally up to a high standard. Friendly attentive service. I'd definitely recommend.
