We stayed in Maribor at Vila Mira for 2 nights in Sept 2011. We had booked this house through booking.com and did not have any interaction with Franc before reaching Maribor. However, Franc was there to welcome us and show us our room. Rooms at Vila Mira are basic but clean. This is not a luxury B&B. The room had a shared balcony with the other room.

Franc is a very interesting person and we had lots of conversations on various subjects. Franc gave us very good tips about restaurants in Maribor and about places to visit around Maribor. The whole experience was like staying at your uncle's house.

Don't stay here if you are very particular about room size and quality. Stay here for good location and interesting conversations with the owner. The main road outside Vila Mira is beautiful lined with chestnut trees. We enjoyed taking a walk on that road.

Few tips about Maribor:
You can visit Pohorje and Ptuj during your stay in Maribor. You can take a gondola to the top of Pohorje. Don't forget to take the Pohorjet ride and buy a ticket for 3 rides as one ride is not enough. We enjoyed eating at Bascarsija, a Bosnian restaurant.

We stayed at Vila Mira for 2 nights in July 2012. We choose this hotel due to some positive reviews that we saw on booking system. The location itself was very nice, not very central but in walking distance to everything.
We arrived early evening and when we called at the hotel's door there was none to welcome us. We sent SMS to the owner and received no response. It was very frustrating. After some time we decided to watch in backyard and we found a man in underwear sleeping on the bench near the table with empty bottles. That was the hotel's owner. When he woke up he said that he needed some time to refresh. Finally he showed us the room (later we understood that it was the smallest room in this villa). The room was uncosy and dusty. The bed sheets had some holes. During our stay we never saw any other client. We were the only people on breakfast. The food was not good, consisted of polenta (nothing similar to Italian taste), some cereals, some fruit.
The owner was in bad mood all the time and every time he saw us he started to talk to us about his private problems.
Overall we had a good stay in Maribor but definitely not due to our stay at Vila Mira.

Don’t expect a high-class hotel. But if you don’t have too high expectations of comfort, you get a low price, a nice hostel and a very welcoming reception. The owner Franc Zorko, a retired support staff for the Slovenian Alpine Team, is very friendly and talkative. We got home made Slovenian specialties for breakfast, including a taste of his homemade Vinjak – the hostel is just nearby the local vineyards. Vila Mira is an old house from 1923, which has been entirely renovated, or rather remodeled with a very odd layout. But it adds charm to the stay. It’s like staying at a friend’s family where your friend is the Addams Family in the Haunted House. Recommended.

I agree with moxinix35, if you are after the hotel-like feeling, than you better avoid it as both of you will feel uncomfortable - the host and the guest :-) But if you like the honest friendly hospitality and meeting real people instead of 5 USD smiles at the front desk, then this is your place to go! Francek is a great person, share a bottle of wine with him and let yourself listening to his stories for some time! The breakfast was also great! The Villa is located 10-15 min walking from the centre, it is located in a beautiful posh green neighbourhood at the foot of the Pyramida hill - covered with vinyards... Rooms were comfortable and the bathrooms spotlessly clean.

But if you enjoy the unexpected and can adjust quickly, then this could be an interesting stay. The owner, Franc, is an intelligent, retired business man with an "old salt" personality suited to the experienced (35,000 sea miles) sailor and ski instructor which he is. He might show you a picture of his sailboat in the Antarctic. The old villa, located in a dead-end street just below Pyramid Hill, 5 minute walk from the city park, is being renovated, so the quality varies from a luxury apartment to small rooms without a wardrobe. The lady serving breakfast was extremely helpful and tried to fulfill all our wishes. Franc is a gourmet, so ask him for recommendations for good restaurants, several of which are within 10-15 minutes walk.

Room tip: For longer stays, ask for a room with closet space.
