Owner description: At Sovereign Hill, the story of an important time and place in Australian History, and the people who lived it, lives on. An internationally acclaimed tourist attraction, Sovereign Hill prides itself on its close attention to detail found in every aspect of this living, outdoor museum. Sovereign Hill is a glimpse of the vigour and excitement of life on Australia’s 1850s goldfields. Visitors can find real gold in the creek – gold pans are provided and it’s ‘finders keepers’, see $150,000 worth of molten gold poured into a gleaming bar, and take in the rich program of activities, shows and demonstrations. On Main Street there are working shops, hotels and a theatre – all based on original Ballarat businesses. Visitors are able to watch goldfields tradespeople in action and take a ride around the township in a horse-drawn coach. For the brave hearted, journey underground on a gold mine tour.

Thoroughly recommend a trip to Sovereign Hill. Very kid friendly with plenty of activities to do and events to see . Highlight was the kids found a little gold panning in the creek. Candle making was fun too. Will be back again!

Sovereign Hill is really well set out and maintained to a high standard. Its a great place for kids to learn a bit of history.
We did the sound and light show,... it was good, not at all what i was expecting ( I thought it would be actors doing a reinactment of the Eureka Stockade ) Also it teachs kids what the southern cross flag ( and the 78,000 people that have that tattoo ) is all about.

We loved the gold pouring, panning for gold, thinking about how we would have coped in that day and age.

Booked with 2 night hotel stay at Steinfelds in Sovereign Hill. Entitled access for 3 days. Done at a leisurely pace. Saw most things. Liked going through the Red Hill Mine- 53 steps. Light show was good. Especially enjoyed the re-enactment. A few more holograms would make it even more experiential. Now I know the history of the Eureka Stockade, and the importance it played on Australian democracy. Fascinating. There's a great book for kids 9-10 years and over, called Eureka Stockade, by Marion Little John. Very informative. Only disappointment is the new cafe- though it's tucked away from the old buildings, there could be more effort on character that suits the rest of the town- and tables should be cleaned more regularly, they were filthy both days. However the coffee was great!
Hope cafe also makes some very tasty pies and pasties.
I bought from Most shops; photo shoot was very cool, but book early so as not to be disappointed, candles dipped, campfire tripod, an old horse shoe and small one engraved from Blacksmith , ring and pendant from Jewellers, soaps and salts from Apothecary, fan, Household lore book, tea towel and bag from Haberdashery, stock man's Hats from leather shop. Street shows and exhibits, bowling, horse wagon rides, Victorian era school demo! That was fun. Of course panning for gold scored 3 pieces! Patience and time. Lots of people on mine machines willing to share and inform. And do go to the gold museum; there are some good sized nuggets on display and the rest is well set out with helpful volunteers-Have fun!!
