Owner description: At Sovereign Hill, the story of an important time and place in Australian History, and the people who lived it, lives on. An internationally acclaimed tourist attraction, Sovereign Hill prides itself on its close attention to detail found in every aspect of this living, outdoor museum. Sovereign Hill is a glimpse of the vigour and excitement of life on Australia’s 1850s goldfields. Visitors can find real gold in the creek – gold pans are provided and it’s ‘finders keepers’, see $150,000 worth of molten gold poured into a gleaming bar, and take in the rich program of activities, shows and demonstrations. On Main Street there are working shops, hotels and a theatre – all based on original Ballarat businesses. Visitors are able to watch goldfields tradespeople in action and take a ride around the township in a horse-drawn coach. For the brave hearted, journey underground on a gold mine tour.

We went there during the AFL grand final weekend and were really surprised at the Sovereign Hill historical place. It takes you to the 1850 Gold rush era. It was enjoyable for my 13 year old kid with loads of history to digest. There are 3 Gold mine tours to choose from and all are equally good. Food at Sovereign Hill is quite expensive so advise would be BYO food or have good outside in CBD. There are Gold Pouring Demonstrations, The 1850s pump house and steam power house which is still in good working condition. Its got the brown's lolly factory which is quite interesting. There are horse cart rides which is great fund and then there is the Alluvial Gold search for Kids. In all a fun experience which one should not miss.

We had a great day out yesterday - enjoyed by adults and kids alike!

While it's not a cheap day out ($135 for 2 adults & 1 child entry) it is clear that they are reinvesting in the customers experience. The venue is really well maintained, clean and easy to get around (with good parking, access to toilets, food venues etc).

While busy, it wasn't over crowded & we had great access to the many tours/shows on offer.

- the underground mine tour (an extra cost but well worth it for 45mins of great insight into the lives of miners and their families)
- the gold pour (free)
- candle making (free)
- candle dipping (a few extra dollars for kids)
- confectionery making (free)
- gold panning (free)

The only reason I didn't give it 5 as a rating as I would love to see more options for takeaway food (as there are loads of beautiful outdoor spaces to sit and enjoy the ambience).

The newish cafe (behind the bakery) was fast with great indoor/outdoor seating but the menu was very limited to fried foods/pies/burgers with no real healthy, fresh options (very pricey as well). As expected I suppose but could be better!

Plan for a full day as there is lots to see and learn (and the staff were all wonderful).

A lovely day out for all!

A great step back in time. We had a great day and return for the Blood on the Southern Cross. Staff were helpful and courteous and aware of the needs of older folks.
