Stayed for one night in the Manor and it was excellent. Had all the amenities you can think of and an extraordinarily comfortable bed! Would definitely recommend it. We had our kids with us as well and they liked it.

We had occasion to stay overnight at Merivale Manor, first when we arrived on South Island and again on the night before we departed for home. In both cases, we were enthusiastically and warmly greeted, first by Brian, the manager and on the second stay by Wayne, the co-owner. These 2 fellows are peas from the same pod, in hospitable manner and appearance, so much so that I had to look twice on the second instance to see that it was not Brian with whom I was speaking. They both have the same jolly sense of humour, hence the title "Merry Merivale. The property 16 a 15 minute drive from the airport complicated, at the moment, by interchange construction at Highway 1 and Memorial Avenue. Merivale is a 6 minute drive to the Bridge of Remembrance and the Re-store Mall of central Christchurch. CBD reconstruction, continuing after the earthquakes suffered earlier was such that the GPS unit in our car was not useful and we would recommend using the public transit system. A bus stop is immediately in front of Merivale Manor.

The delightful, pale yellow manor house is set back from Papanui Road, set in beautifully manicured grounds, flanked by facing modern motel units, 5 per side. The office is the last unit on the left with cozy parking behind the manor house. Besides the motel units, some suites are also available in the manor house. As mentioned, we were hospitably greeted by the humorous Brian (and later, Wayne) who offered us sweet treats while he checked us in, accomplishing the paperwork necessaries very quickly. The Manor offers a continental breakfast of cereal and toast so we were offered our choice of milk and bread types which were retrieved from a refrigerator. He then escorted us to our room, key in hand and explained where things were and how they worked.

Our room was a meticulously clean, comfortable and well appointed abode. The facing of the unit was tinted glass facing the central court/drive. As we entered, immediately facing us was a square table with 2 chairs beneath a shelf with a flat screen television and stereo. Beyond was the kitchenette with black granite countertops. A microwave was mounted above the counter, a fridge below the counter with cupboards holding place settings for 3 and kitchen utensils. A glass top, 2 burner stove was mounted in the long arm of the L-shaped counter with a stainless steel sink in the short arm under the rear facing window. From here, to the right, was the ceramic tiled bathroom. On the left of the entry stood a glass-walled shower stall, beside it the toilet and, facing the door, a spa tub with water jets. To the right of the entry stood the vanity sink with sufficient counter space and holding bath supplies. Large, fluffy towels were mounted on the heated towel bar and face cloths were rolled up on the vanity.

Returning to the entry door, the glass wall to our right was coverable with sheers and blackout drapes overlooking the queen sized bed which is flanked by nightstands with independent bedlamps. There was sufficient space between that outside wall and the bed for me to open my suitcase to access my things and still leave sufficient room around the bed to move about. The mattress has an electric heat controller. In the corner opposite, rested the closet and holding the ironing board. Find the electric iron in the kitchenette cupboards. On the door jamb of the entry door, we found the remote controller for the air conditioning unit. The mattress was firm and comfortable, the linens of excellent quality and we slept very well.

Brian provided us with paper maps and recommended an Italian eatery, not 5 minutes walking distance away, for dinner. He telephoned on our behalf to make reservations. It was an excellent recommendation with abundant hot food, quickly served, delicious and satisfying. We learned to trust his judgement. Similarly, we took Wayne's advice on things to do to occupy our time on our last day prior to our plane departure for home. Also a most satisfying experience.

It is our habit to enjoy a "happy hour" each day with a snack of local wine, cheese etc. We had sufficient room in front of our unit to set up a table and chairs to do so al fresco. Brian's wife suggested that on our return visit, we might want to do so at the bistro tables and chairs on the front porch of the manor house in order to be more comfortable. This we did and it was a delightful conclusion to our 3 + week journey through New Zealand.

All in all, a fully satisfying accommodation for the short or longer term traveler. We highly recommend the location and the facilities of merry Merivale Manor. We heartily thank Wayne, Brian, and their spouses for their affable Kiwi hospitality.

We recently stayed at Merivale Manor when we flew into Christchurch and again the night before we flew out. It had been recommended to us and was spot on. We did stay in the Manor House both times and found it to be warm, comfortable, clean and that extra touch of luxuriousness.
We found the bed to be extremely comfortable, the linen plush and generous and the fresh milk and bread on arrival much appreciated.
Free WiFi was easily obtained, a must for us when travelling.
All the staff we encountered went out of their way to make us feel welcome, with helpful advice on dining nearby, even ringing to make a booking for us.
We would happily stay at Merivale Manor again, wouldn't even look elsewhere if visiting Christchurch plus it was easy access to and from the airport.

Room Tip: Manor house had character and charm. Spa studios were easy access at the front. Apartments for families across the road.

The place is in one word: perfect.
Is close to the center - a 10 minute drive - in a beautiful, peaceful area.
Highly recommend to everyone who travels to NZ!
