Description: Upon opening our doors in 2009, we were thrilled to receive the The Age Good Food Guide's 'HatAward' and have maintained it ever since. Complementing these achievements, we are very proud of Head Sommelier, Travis Howe, who not only won Sommelier of the Year but also picked up the 2013 Wine List of the Year. Nestled in one of Melbourne's iconic laneways (basement Oliver Lane, and Flinders Lane), Coda is located in the busiest and most dynamic culinary precinct the city has to offer. A stone's throw away from the Yarra River, Flinders Street station and Federation Square, the restaurant enjoys hosting a diverse group of diners from frequenting locals who live and work on its doorstep to diners from all over the globe. Upon entering the restaurant you will be greeted by a member of our friendly team headed by Mykal and Kate Bartholomew and Executive Chef Adam D'Sylva. The trio has assembled a dedicated team with highly sought-after experience from many international and Melbourne-based restaurants. Coda's relaxed environment provides a versatile setting for a range of engagements. Whatever your occasion - from a quick pre-football meal, to a long Sunday lunch, business dining or a cosy seat for an anniversary - we look forward to your visit. While bookings are highly recommended, patrons without a reservation can enjoy the full menu at the bar.

Having read a few recent reviews, was prepared for not great service, so am pleased to report that Coda is not resting on its betel leaves. It is not a cheap offering, however one goes for the interesting flavours and these lived up to expectation. The food was expertly cooked and served and we were very pleased with our choices. There is an extensive (expensive) wine list and we enjoyed both wine and red wines. Nice but not over the top atmosphere and great place to treat friends.

We were very disappointed by our experience at Coda. The service was terrible, the food was ok at best - despite the waiter informing us that we had ordered the 'best dishes' and the atmosphere was dull.
I'm not sure what all the hype is about and I prefer any other restaurant on Flinders Lane.

We have been to Coda before and went back with friends from interstate. For a restaurant of this calibrate I very very disappointed in the service. We had to hunt down a waiter for food and drinks all night. While the food is delicious I think is was overpriced. $24 for a coleslaw? I would certainly not recommend Coda or go back there again.

We tried twelve dishes over a five hour weekend lunch.

The final score lay between four and five stars.

Of particular interest were the tempura style prawns and the blue fin tuna salad -because we ordered them both twice.

And both second serves were quite clearly much better than the initial dishes delivered at the first round.

If I were Head Chef I would be very pleased, and even proud, but certainly not complacent.

The best example of a no-room-for-complacency state was the duck curry.

This duck curry is almost famous. And indeed it was a delightfully tender duck, who had clearly had a happy life.

But the yellow curry component was rather lack lustre. A somewhat salty monotone of one dimensional brown pond.

I compared the aforementioned pond with the very great depth of flavour and multidimensional pond experience available in The Spirit House in Queensland.

They are ponds apart.

Coda have done extremely well over a long period of time.

But they must not rest on their betel leaves.

We have eaten at Coda many times and its the restaurant we recommend for visitors. We prefer not to book and take a chance as we like the informal seating at the bar or on the bench seats near the bar which are for walk ins only. We did this last Thursday 23 November and had a 20 min wait for a seat, no problems, there was a spot for us 2 to enjoy a drink while we waited. About 10 mins into our wait, a bench seat set for 4 people (which we weren't offered) was broken down to 2 settings. We thought, unusual, why would you do this on a busy night, maybe it was for us, it wasn't, but it was for 2 people that had just walked in and knew the staff at Coda. We were waiting right next to it so heard their conservation. They haven't changed their policy on booking the bench seats as we watched larger groups arrive without a booking and sit there. What not to do to make your customers feel valued. If we hadn't already invested time waiting we would have left, yes the food is good but this visit left a sour taste and we will not be returning. Very disappointing that Coda operates this who you know seating practice.
