What an absolute delight to be able to witness first-hand sub-Antarctic plant species from the comfort of the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. This was a quick stop on our plan, but certainly worthy of a mention. The room is chille
I like coming in here but this time it looked a bit in need of a clean up and refurbishment. There is also a new box by the door asking for a $2 donation. Perhaps for the refurb?
We enjoyed moving about the Botanical Gardens but the Sub Antarctic Plant House was a highlight and easy to find.
It was so interesting to discover plant life which for most people could never be seen any other way than in pictures. Not many people get to visit arctic regions, so this is your second best choice!
always worth a visit when you are at the Botanical Gardens. very interesting to see the variety of sub-antarctic plants.
We spent a cold but interesting 5 minutes in the chilled display room. A great wall mural depicts a Macquarie Island landscape and the audio of sea birds, penguins and seals etc adds to the experience. The subAntarctic plants growing therein are interesting, amazing how they can survive on only a few hours of sunlight. Also, the constant cold wind indicates the hard ships faced by the historical explorers like Douglas Mawson. A two dollar coin donation is suggested. Worth a quick look.
