We had a nice day out at Billabong Sanctuary, and we especially liked the crocodile feeding. However, we must agree with other reviewers who have complained about/noticed the small enclosures. Billabong has responded that they follow strict guidelines, but still we feel that these animals were kept in smaller spaces that at other wildlife parks we have visited. It really did feel more like a zoo, which is not for us. The emus' enclosure seemed far far far too small, a possum seemed to live in a cage, the dingos have too little space to run around and the kangaroos must be too many for such a small space! Also, we felt that the entry fee was a bit steep - more expensive than anywhere else - and the park overall needs an update. The outdoor furniture was really old and worn down and the toilets need a modernization as well.

Good Morning Artemis,

I am glad you had a nice day at the Billabong and especially liked the crocodile feeding.

Billabong Sanctuary is a member of the Zoo and Aquarium Association which covers all of the zoos and sanctuaries in Australia and New Zealand. We are very proud of the fact that we have animal welfare accreditation with this highly regarded association. You mentioned the kangaroos in such a small space. Kangaroo Corral is where we temporarily house young joeys and their mothers so we can keep an eye on them until they are old enough to be released into our 25 acres of park.

As for the toilets, sure they are the same vintage as the rest of the park but they are freshly painted and spotlessly clean and the ladies toilets have the personal touch of freshly cut flowers every day.

We feel that we offer great value for money with wildlife presentations throughout the day and free of charge interactive experiences with Australian animals such as dingoes, koalas, lizards, pythons, turtles and handling crocodiles where you can use your own camera for a photo opportunity.

Thanks for visiting,

Cheers,
Bob Flemming

We drove down from Cairns to meet Wanda and Reuben, the two beautiful wombats at Billabong Sanctuary, It was TOTALLY worth the drive. As far as I know, this is one of the few places in the world were you can hold a wombat. If you're worried about animal cruelty -- please don't. These animals are ambassadors and are given the best care possible. It is clear they are loved and treasured!

Jeremy was leading the presentations on the day we were there, and I can't emphasize how incredible he was. He showed us the blue tongued skink, carpet python, koala, baby crocodile, and wombat! We were also given the opportunity to pet or hold these lovely creatures. Jeremy was informative and patient.

On the day I visited, a volunteer photographer was present and documenting all the encounters and presentations. I wish I had gotten her name -- she was so sweet and caring. Thanks to her, we were able to meet some of the dingos who were on a walk.

After arriving back home, I lost my photos and reached out to the sanctuary for help. I received an immediate reply with the information I requested. That's how sweet these people are.

Thank you Billabong Sanctuary for the amazing work that you do. I will forever treasure the memories here! Please pass my sentiments on to your all star team. <3

G’ day Jenny,

Wow, what a great review!! So pleased to hear that we exceeded your expectations on the trip down from Cairns and you were able to get up close and personal with our wombats -Wanda and Reuben.

Our staff at the Billabong love their job and enjoy passing on their knowledge and passion for our animals.

Your review was passed on to our rangers at our weekly staff meeting.

Cheers,
Bob Flemming

We were on a road trip from Airlie Beach to Mission Beach and decided to stop here on the way. Ended up spending about 4-5 hours here, because they have all these different animal 'sessions' where the ranger talks about the animals. They also give you a chance to pet/hold different animals! The highlight for me was the koala, which you pay for, but SO WORTH IT, since there's not many places you can do that. So glad we visited this zoo!!

Howdy Tracy from Vancouver,

Thanks for making the decision to call in at the Billabong on your way north. We are about 3.5 hours drive north from Airlie Beach so a great stop over. There is so much going on and so much to do at the Sanctuary that most travellers spend the night in Townsville.

Queensland and South Australia are the only 2 states in Australia where you can hold a koala and Billabong provides a great experience. While we do charge to hold a koala, you receive a souvenir photo, a digital option and the experience is on the edge of a billabong (water hole). We do support the koala hospital on Magnetic Island with a percentage of the takings from these photos.

Safe travels,
Cheers,
Bob Flemming

I took my 3 year old nephew here recently & we both really enjoyed all aspects of the park. Easy to find, easy parking, lots of animals & no huge crowds! We were able to feed the ducks (which were my nephews favourites!) & watched the keeper feed some of the other animals. I would have liked to have stayed for the croc feeding time but we had got there early and the little guy had had about as much walking as his little legs could take.
All the keepers were friendly, nice spaces to sit & enjoy morning tea or lunch & the cafe was well stocked.
Hope to come back soon, thank you!

Greetings Amy,

It's always the simple things in life that can be the best - feeding the ducks is a good experience for the kids as once the ducks see the feed bag, they will follow you forever.
When children are tired or if you miss out on some shows, we do have the offer of return the following day free of charge.

Thanks for visiting and look forward to you returning soon.

Cheers,
Bob Flemming
