We were there before Xmas when the new dining room had just opened. Excellent food, phenomenal wine list, picturesque position and modern but cozy veranda with a lovely wood burner. Not formal and accommodates every age. Not at all stuffy, good service and fairly priced. The only problem is...the wines are too good to practice moderation so ensure you take a tea total driver, book a room in the hotel or book a taxi.

Not been during daytime yet but looking forward to it in the Summer.

Alberto Calaba used to run the historic rifugio Guglielmina before it burnt down (see Google) and he has built a new winner. Good on you (and the family who supports you) we need more of this kind of joy.

Albert and his staff at La Gruba offer a special food experience. We sat in their new glass room and felt very cosseted by the fire and atmosphere. The drive getting there was also part of the adventure being set in the old village of Niel atop a hill.
We were offered a taster of all the starters by the charming Nepalese waitress. Simply splendid well-sourced and prepared local ham, bresaola, goat cheese flan, cheese and onion marmalade and slow-cooked tomatoes. For mains we had wonderful guinea fowl and beef braised in white wine. Albert is clearly passionate about his food and wine and we had a local wine and his favourite herb digestif which he placed on our table to help ourselves. I believe you can stay here too and would suggest that would be a great thing to do. I hope to return and do just that.

October is definitely the time of year most places close down. We were lucky to be advised to go there. Not really well signposted down in the valley we drove in the early darkness up the mountain to the hamlet Gruba, assuming we would find the restaurant there. It got darker and darker and the road did not stop winding itself up the mountain. By the time we thought we better give up, the road was too narrow to turn. A few minutes later we saw some light up the mountain and ended up parking at the foot of a small hamlet. A short walk up brought us to the restaurant. What a wonderful surprise...the food was excellent, the service super friendly as were the prices.
We definitely want to stay there once and wake up in the morning to see the amazing view.

Food was amazing. Generous local . The restaurant is in a tiny mountain village right on the edge wth footpaths winding off across the beautiful mountainside. Inside is a lovely cosy restaurant with lovely log fire burning. A perfect place to be snowed in.
