Me and my partner went to Mellieha for a bit of exploring and came across these shelters... very very interesting place and the fella on the front seems to know a lot about it all.. worth a visit if you’re passing!!

It is sobering to ponder what the people of Malta went through during WWII. With roughly 2 square feet per person (barely enough room to stand), limited lighting and ventilation, and the shaking and noise from the bombs it must have been very traumatic! Malta's role in WWII is often omitted or overlooked (at least in North American history books) but it certainly played a significant role and the people are to be commended for their bravery and strength. A word of caution if you are claustrophobic and/or are taller than 6 feet the tunnels are small and low at times.

The shelter is very dark and opressive, with a rough floor. It is difficult to imagine what it must have been like for the people who used it during the bombing, when it was lit by candle light. Well worth a visit.

This really brings home just how much the Maltese people suffered during WW2, and their strength in coping with what happened. It is important not to forget these things, and this museum helps to reinforce the impressions of Malta and her people.

Very interesting, and have a chat with the attendant who has experience of what the shelters were like in the war.
