We stayed at the Villa Franceschi for 1 week travelling with Saga. The hotel is a family run hotel who also live on the premises. The food was excellent with 3 courses each evening and 3 choices for each course. The patron and his family were friendly and helpful. We had excellent trips out to Florence, Sienna and Vinci, these cost extra. There were other trips available also. Wonderful walks in the area that is covered with forest. A wonderful and enjoyable holiday, very memorable. Highly recommended.

This smallish, lovely, if slightly eccentric, 3 star family-run hotel in the Appenine mountains in northern Tuscany is really quite remote. It is set in a stunning location, in a medieval village with an imposing 13th century church and attractive municipal square complete with striking statue of a warrior on horseback and trickling fountain. The views of the surrounding mountains are wonderful and tourists are few and far between. The hotel is a homely and welcoming base from which to go walking or visit by bus, train or private coach the great Tuscan cities of Florence, Sienna and Lucca and the hill village of San Gimignano. Wonderful provincial pasta, fish and meat dishes with fresh local produce, cheerful, friendly staff and, in our case, a rather cramped bathroom where the shower was too close to the toilet for comfort. Every surface in the hotel is crammed with knick knacks and family photographs – not for those who like their interiors minimalist. It’s also worth paying extra for a room with a balcony and views of the surrounding mountains. The walking can be quite daunting - some of the inclines are steep and the ground can be rough under foot. Serious walkers will need boots and poles. However there are easier walks for the more occasional rambler including a stroll around the village offering panoramic views of the encircling mountain settlements and the opportunity to stride along an old railway track to other nearby hamlets. Despite being 800 metres up the mountains, where temperatures are generally cooler than in the cities, it can get very hot here in the daytime. There is no swimming pool or outside garden, although there is a veranda with seating under an awning at the front of the hotel which abuts the village square. Nor is there any air conditioning in the bedrooms. There are two cafes, three grocers, one butchers, a pharmacy, a barbers, beauty salon and tabac. Gavinana is small and be warned very few locals speak English. In the comparative cool of the evening the locals gather in the square to gossip while the children play freely and house martins zoom in and out feeding their young in nests in the church tower. If you want a peaceful holiday away from hustle and bustle, this could be just the place. Simon Midgley

Stayed at this lovely family run hotel for a week, the Franceschi family are delightful and treat everyone as a guest in their home. Gavinana is a secret hideaway off the main tourist trail and just the place to wind down and relax.

The food in the Hotel Franceschi is exceptional as a non red meat eater they adapted all the menus to suit my requirements, lovely fresh vegetables and salads at dinner each evening, the deserts are to die for.

The rooms are comfotable and clean with quirky bathrooms.

Great holiday I have not laughed so much for a long time, our SAGA rep Michela was delightful with a wonderful knowledge of the area. Michela and the Franceschi family worked very hard to make our special. The one thing I would say is if you have mobility problems maybe this is not the place for you.

Wonderful family run hotel in the Tuscan mountain village of Gavinana. We were there first week of July and the weather was superb. The little village its in has another bar a couple of shops and a delightful provisions store with a delicious chilled deli counter. There's also markets a couple of times a week. The bus stop is moments from the hotel and is a wonderfully economical wat to get into pistoa , the main town, where you can easily get a train into Florence. The whole process for bus and train cost about 12 euros return. You can also get the bus to other villages further up the mountain . I recommend it. The food in this hotel is absolutely wonderful,. We upgraded our room and had a fabulous view from our balcony over the lush Tuscan scenery. A fabulous relaxing week. Highly recommended.

A most wonderful hotel which is also home the most lovely family all involved in running it. It is set up in the mountains on Tuscany and served by a very good bus service. Half an hour into Pistoiae then half an hour to Florence. We went with Saga who also organised various trips to Vinci, Sienna etc dependent upon take up of numbers wishing to visit these places. The food is faultless, the owners daughters husband is the Chef. The local people are really lovely and most welcoming. This is like going back in time to the way things used to be. Happy children playing outside, welcoming people, good food, one other main Bar in the Square. If you want a quiet, happy holiday with lovely people, this is the place to come. Absolutely wonderful. Oh yes, and our Saga guide was absolutely brilliant too. I can't understand why anyone could write adverse reports of her. She did her very best for us and was really lovely!! We all got on extremely well with her and she also made this the most enjoyable holiday we have ever had. They all arranged and joined in the celebration of our Golden Wedding Anniversary - just like our own family here would have. Recommend it?? You bet!!!
