This hotel was a memorable treat, nestling below the cleft of the cliff on which the town of Orvieto is perched. The thunder clattered on a Summer night, the rain poured down and the flashes of lightening triggered our imagination of monks and saints. I much enjoyed the quiet secluded swimming pool surrounded by greenery, so welcome after a hot day. Our best day was a trip to the amazing village of Civita, itself perched on a mesa in a sandstone valley behind BagnoRegio, and then a quick visit to Bolsena on the lovely lake.

We were very excited to stay at this beautifully looking castle/abbey on our honeymoon trip. But Sadly I must admit the dinner experience at the hotel during our stay just killed the entire vibe. Room was nice, hallways were definitely very inducing and the breakfast was great. But on the flip side the restaurant this hotel features offered terrible experience aside from the view.

We were bit by bugs, service was slow (1 person for all tables) and both of our main dishes were awful. My husband order a chicken plate. The only piece of chicken we had was skin (?!). I ordered fish fillet supposedly from a chef who gets fresh fish from the coast, but it was so salty and dry and I barely touched it. At the end we left hungry and very disappointed.

We stayed here in October while vacationing in Italy. It must have been the off season as we were the only guests in the hotel. It was eerie and cold, and the overall grounds were very unkept. The breakfast was nice and plentiful. It may be more inviting in summer months.

Well it's been two years since my last review of this hotel, to start with there is no taking away from the uniqueness of this property. It was still as beautiful as I remember. However upon returning we found the rooms to be musty and worn, the pool was still a shambles in fact it was worse than the last time, they really don't seem to concerned about that area of the property.

The biggest disappointment was the dinning , the last time we were there the meals was pricey but it was fun to watch them cook a steak on a wood fired grill in from of you. All in all the food then was outstanding and worth the high price. This time however was completely different, the menu has become a limited thing with no Italian meals and so sort of effect to come up with some funky "International Meals" as we were told. I had the pork skewers and my wife had the chicken, both were unpalatable. The pork skewers consisted of two squares of pork fat about 2inch square stuck on a stick it was served with three tiny shrivelled green beans , it was well by far the worst meal we had after travelling for a month through northern Italy eating in all sorts of establishments. My wife's chicken was a paper thin piece of chicken wrapped around a unrecognizable green paste. All of which we had the honour of paying over 100 euros

In short the hotel is a stunning place , but for God's sake eat in town there are tremendous places to eat there and at a quarter of the prices charged at the hotel

Room Tip: Try and get in the main building

We stayed here 9 years ago and found it to be charming, unique and the service and rooms were perfection. We ate dinner at the highly rated and recommended restaurant and enjoyed every bite. This time we came back with 3 rooms reserved for our family and a 8:00 PM dinner reservation to find that the property is not what it was. We had come for the food as well as the historical ambiance, calling 3 times prior to arriving to ensure they had our reservation for dinner and that the facilities including the pool would be open. We left Capri early so we could get to the property and enjoy the pool before dinner. When we arrived we were told that they would not be serving dinner as the kitchen had some undisclosed problem and that the pool would not be open. They recommended we go to the town of Orvieto, a 20 minute drive on dark, unfamiliar roads, for dinner which, if you have been there on a cool early June night, it is a ghost town.

The rooms are still nice but the furniture was worn. The couch in our room was cream color and had black marks on it, just little things that on our last trip were not evident. It appears the property has turned into a wedding venue and individual travelers are not what they are interested in hosting. I would still say it is an experience to stay at the property but maybe going back a second time is not a good idea.

Room Tip: They tend to put everyone in a back wing, ask to see if you can get a room off of the main hall
