PROS
+ courteous staff at reservations office
+ sailors and captain going the extra mile to help out when needed
+ timely departures
+ On-board guide giving information on the islands

CONS
- Overcrowded vessel
- heavily propped towards industrializing the tourism niece in the Eolian islands: it's a stark contrast with the islands' quaint, laid back lifestyle
- Stampede when boarding in order to get the best seats - NOT a nice thing when having young kids

3 weeks ago my husband and I used this company to visit the Aeolian islands of Lipari and Volcano. Due to depart at 9am, we joined other people to board, it was a bit of a scramble, we all wanted the best seats!!! If you like to sit on deck the Aeolian Princess only had a few seats, so we stood up. The planned journey was to visit Lipari first, then Vulcano but we had to make a short stop at Vulcano, to drop off some tourists having a 'sleep-over', and then go on to Lipari. This is a beautiful island, plenty to keep you occupied for the allowed two hours. Then it's back on the boat, boarding was an absolute shambles, pushing and shoving, trying to keep close to my husband, hated it. Very lucky to get one of the few seats on the front of the boat. Pleasantly surprised by the short tour of some interest points of interest on the way to Vulcano, the commentary was very good, excellent knowledge and English. However, having to spend three hours here was so boring. Not a great deal to do, unless you plan to sit on the beach, obviously it's black sand, or cover yourself with smelly mud! After an hour we were stuck for something to do but wait. In my opinion this would have been a much better and less disappointing day if the times on each island had been reversed.

The Aeolian islands are lovely. What spoils it is the number of companies dropping off tourists continually. Panarea is probably worth a visit but we were not given enough time to explore. Same with Stromboli. The harbours of Panarea and Stromboli are the nautical equivalent of Gatwick. Wave after wave of tourists are vomited off the boats onto the little islands that lack the infrastructure (toilets and waste management) to accommodate the vast numbers. I missed the eruptions after sunset, because I was on the wrong side of the ship and there was not enough space to go to the side facing the volcano. Judging by the sound of the other passengers it was pretty impressive.
I don't like giving negative feedback but I think Tarnav and all the other companies involved in aeolian cruises will need to rethink this unsustainable and unsatisfactory approach to tourism.

We booked the Panarea and Stromboli tour on a Friday, having been stopped by their charming representative on the Main Street in Vulcano. The price was very reasonable (€30 each) which seemed cheaper than some of their competitors. We then looked online and saw the reviews were not great. However we couldn't find fault with the whole thing, it was a very pleasant day. The boats arrived on time, yes there were a lot of people as it's tourist season, but there was plenty of room for all - the boats are deceptively spacious. There was a commentary in three languages, Italian, English and French, which we were impressed by. The islands were beautiful and seeing Stromboli erupt was incredible. A lot of these reviews seem to say the food on the boat is no good but on this tour no food was on offer, we just brought snacks and then ate on Stromboli which was very nice.

I was a bit concerned after reading some of the reviews. However I found the trip well organised. Yes it was busy. We stayed a the back of the boat where you get on so had a sit as most people ventured straight into the boat to try to get to the front I assume. The only disadvantage of this for us, is this was the smoking area and we don't smoke. Otherwise we could see all that we wanted and got off easily and quickly when we stopped. Had enough time for a really quick look around Lipari and had lunch, but time did go very quick and as you are worried about missing the boat probably didn't really make the best use of our time. Volcano was interesting, we hired a little jeep type vehicle as it was very hot I didn't fancy walking around too much. This got us around the island in a fun way. We didn't experience the hot springs or mud bath it was very smelly around that area but rest of the island was okay.
