We came across the partially revealed amphitheatre whilst walking around the beautiful city of Lecce.

Apparently it was discovered whilst digging the foundations of the Bank on the square.

It really is amazing that this 25,000 seater building has laid undiscovered and so intact for so long.

An amazing find!

Every town has one ,this one was discovered in the 20th century unfortunately only half is visible as the other half remains built on . There is no access but you can walk round the perimeter and everything is visible There are plenty of informative signs about it

The amphitheatre is in a piazza surrounded by bars so you can enjoy the view at passeggiata time whilst local families relax

This Roman amphitheater built in the 1st or 2nd century AD lay buried beneath the streets of Lecce until construction crews in the early 20th century came across it. It is not possible to go down into the site but it is easy to see while walking around St. Oronzo square. I read that it is sometimes used for concerts.

It's a special square in the city centre, where the sacre and the prophane, culture and special pugliese food meet.If you visit it at Midway the music Will delight and entertain you for a few minutes.
