We stayed here for a weekend during the truffle festival, and the central location of the Albergo was perfect. The room and bathroom were simple but of a good size and very clean, with a comfortable double bed (with a duvet over the sheets which was great for warmth). I liked the fact that the breakfast room/lounge was open all day, and we could help ourselves to bottled water, fruit, cakes, tea etc all day and night. At breakfast itself they made omelettes etc to order also. The staff were very friendly and helpful (eg letting us use their fridge to store the truffles we bought); they go home at night and so you have to let yourself into the building with the extra keys they give you, but they give you a telephone number to call in case there is a problem, and there was no problem at all for us! We didn't have our car, but if you do, there is very convenient hotel parking in the gated courtyard next to the hotel. We had a very comfortable stay, and the location was perfect to just walk out of the door and enjoy the beautiful town and the truffle festival. I hope to visit Alba again and would stay here again; it is simple, but it ticks all the important boxes and is great value for money.

It can be confusing getting into the hotel, so instead of complaining about it as in other reviews, I figured I would give some advice.

The Google directions are spot-on. When you arrivé look for an archway between two buildings with a do not enter sign. ( see picture) Go through it and park on the left side of the courtyard, there are signs for the hotel parking on the walls.

There is a glass door with the hotel name on it, it is always locked. You must walk back out through the archway to the street and go in the front door.

The front door is also locked. There is a button labeled ". Suonare albergo" press this and someone will buzz the door open. (see picture)

Then walk in and go up the stairs to the "1st floor" (in Italy the 1st floor is always one floor above the "ground" floor)

At the top of the stairs make a right and there are solid wood doors, that goes into the reception for the hotel.

The reception and the archway gates close at night , so get there early so you can get your keys and gate opening code.

We had room #3. It was a simple room with private bath, tiny shower and balcony. The balcony was fantastic as it opens to the Piazza and the Dumo. There are wood shutters, a insulated glass door and curtains to block out the noise and light, we have a white noise app on our phone and slept day and night with no problems.
There were not a lot of lights in the room do it was a little dark in the morning and late at night.

We showed up early the first day and housekeeping hurried to make the room for us. We offered to comeback later, but they were most accommodating, thank you!
The second day they didn't refill the toilet paper ( we had to ask for more) and we didnt notice that there was no shampoo or soap until it was too late and we were in the shower!

Breakfast was nothing fancy, but good. Wifi was better with our phone.

This hotel was not as good as we thought ( from advice on tripadvisor). A bit confusing to get in as reception is on the first floor. The lady was very helpful and friendly. The rooms are impersonal and small. There is a balcony but you cannot access it. Our biggest deception was the breakfast. As there was no fresh bread we quickly went to the bakery across the street. The lady gave us some strong remarks about that although we did not complain. We felt harassed afterwards.

I love luxury hotels as I work in the hospitality and I like to see what our colleagues do. But my wife like simple things. So this time I booked the Hotel San Lorenzo. The welcome was very friendly in a genuine way. The two girls at reception were very welcoming. The location is perfect, just beside the duomo and with a convenient private and gated car park. The only cons were the noise as you could hear what happens in the corridor and the cleanliness which was good but can be improved. Simplicity does not exclude attention to details. Breakfast was simple but fine. The rate was excellent...you cannot expect more at this rate.
