“Historic church and Abbey”

Abbazia di Santo Spirito
Reviewed 11 October 2016

A little difficult to locat needed google maps to find. Watch out as there are 2 entrances side by side. The one on the left guarded by a nun is the best as it gives access to church where there are marvellous plaster statues and decorations. A donation is requested and we were shown around by the nun who spoke excellent English. The door on the right goes into a limited part of the old abbey no longer used by the nuns and costs 4 euros . Access is limited and no guide and we were chased out before we could properly explore well before their nominal closing time.

The atmosphere that is created in the summer evenings is that of an elegant and charming, thanks to a lighting that enhances the park and the structure of this prestigious period residence.

Ancient Roman church, in the harmonious simplicity of its structure and of its interior, which exacerbate the mystical character, fits perfectly with the places and the buildings that surround it, and is topped by a bell tower and an imposing Romanesque tower dating to 1282.

As we entered the Church with some other vistors one of the Nuns came out & gave us a personal tour, in Italian & English. It was most informative & enjoyable. All the more so as we had to climb very high to this Church & the Cathedral & we timed it badly (avoid early PM), so this tour was a real bonus.

The monastery façade on approach is quite attractive, topped by a belfry. One of the resident nuns kindly gave us an informative tour of the Serpotta decorated church. She said there are now nine nuns in the congregation including a number in the young age group.

The church is delightful and is a marvellous example of the creativity of the master Serpotta. The stucco sculptures show many scenes from the bible, with the sidewalls depicting the life of Jesus. An endearing feature is the presence of putti in various poses.

Other pleasing decorative features are the fine ceiling, other statuary and some paintings.

In the monastery we bought a tray of almond dolci, which sustained us on our way to the next attraction.
