As home to the longest established parlaiment on the planet this is historically a big hitter. Being British I have heard Westminster described as the mother of all parlaiments and held up as something of an historical model for others - when in fact the accolade belongs here.

As imposing as the history is the building housing the institution is unimposing. Pretty - indeed but unless you knew what it was or you werew making a special effort to find it you would hardly notice it. So its worth the effort to see this for the history - but don't expect to be blown away by the building or experience a "wow factor".

when you stand in front of it you can see in the center of the roof the crown of Christian IX, King of Denmark, who was the monarch of Iceland when the building was completed in 1881 (you can see the date just below the roof line). Seeing this building is particularly worth it is because it's across the street from the pretty public square which is a gathering place for the citizens of this city which was very much in the news when their financial banking system imploded in 2008.
Worth a visit is also the Frikirkjan church next door.

We first saw the Parliament Building on our walking food tour. It's a beautiful building, and if not too crowed you can get a great shot of it from the lawn across the street. People we hanging out and having picnics. We didn't take a tour or see the inside any but still a beautiful building from the outside.

Parliament House houses the Icelandic legislature. It is small, and has a lovely, though tiny, garden behind the building.
