Very poor customer service when trying to book an event

Review of 101 Hotel
1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 26 Feb 2024
Spent several days struggling to book an event space here. The staff did not respond to my emails promptly, left me on hold for long periods of time when I phoned them, told me they would phone me back but didn't, were hard to understand, and impolitely declined my request to bring a birthday cake to this birthday party I was planning. After 4 days of slow back-and-forth communication, they told me that in fact a hotel guest had reserved the space and I would therefore no longer be able to book it. Very disappointing experience.

Wonderful Art all over hotel . Service was great , rooms very clean and super functional .
Enough space unlike most hotels in Europe . Lobby is very cozy . Art works are very well curated .
Rooms are large , there is lots of space to put everything and lots of electrical outlets .

Beautiful hotel in the heart of downtown Reykjavik. Close walk to the bay and many attractions. The staff was friendly and helpful. Also, the restaurant Kastrup around the corner was great. And the bar appeared to be a destination for drinks.

Our room #405 overlooked the Harpa Concert Hall (beautiful modern glass building with the harbor and the mountains behind it), the Culture House, a city park, was right next to Bus Stop #6 for Flybus (airport shuttle) and tour/ excursion pick-up's, and was within a 10-15 minute walk to many attractions, restaurants and shopping. Location amazing! No special perks as others have mentioned even though part of the Marriott system. Was not extraordinarily expensive given that many hotels are very very expensive in Reykjavik.
Pros: Lobby and bar beautiful. Staff courteous, friendly and efficient. Very clean, comfortable beds. Liked the modern aesthetic of the room. Lots of light through the windows, but with well fitted black out shades (not needed as much for us given December). Great desk with multiple outlets overlooking the view. We went to a bar across the street for dinner, Islenski Barinn - reasonably priced, very lively (long line out the door, though we got there at a lucky moment and got right in), very friendly and welcoming, and the food was terrific!
Cons: No outlets next to either side of the bed, really unacceptable! No teapot or coffee pot, major bummer in the mornings. Halls are very dimly lit. The bathroom and bedroom are wide open to each other, that's not so appealing, though the glass enclosure around the toilet was fine. A bit more storage/ bigger closet would have been appreciated.
We were there off season so the hotel was sparsely occupied and no loud noise from neighboring restaurants/ bars, but I could see this as a potential problem during holidays/ in high season.

Terrible avoid this hotel! A lack of staff and poor service from those that are there. I wrote a great review of this hotel in 2015 this was one of the best hotels in Iceland. Now I suggest you never go here, it’s sadly fallen no help with bags, no cooked food at the hotel, rude staff, making help the guests last of their priorities, poorly trained staff and even forgot our event was happening a total joke from start to finish. Management need to be fired and this can come back to being a great hotel

Overall I was impressed with the hotel, the staff, breakfast, the design and the location was super,, however; there was no sound proofing at all. Our room faced the street and at night we could hear people talking and yelling after leaving a bar across the street. The hotel shares a wall with a nightclub that had really loud music and our room was right next to it. It started about 11 or 12 midnight. We could not sleep. We could feel vibrations from the music. So for most of our visit we were not well rested. I don’t like to write bad reviews but had I known this before I would not have stayed there.
