Comfortable and Modern, but not centrally located.

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Aug 2021
We stayed at the Grand Hotel for one night at the start of a cruise around Iceland. It is a clean, modern, and comfortable hotel a bit outside the city center. They do, however, provide shuttle service into town. Their COVID protocols were throrough and reassuring and the main reason our tour company chose this hotel. The staff is friendly and helpful.

Dear Happy Camper 2004,

Thank you for your review!
We are happy that you mentioned our free shuttle to the city center. We are located just outside of the city centre and a walk there is very easy and enjoyable, especially if you choose to walk by the seaside.
Thank you for mentioning our COVID protocols being followed - it is very important for us that both our guests and staff will stay safe and relaxed during the visit to Iceland or shift :)

Best regards,
Bartek Zabel

Seemed all the big tour groups use this hotel. We saw signs for Trafalgar, Lindblad, Celebrity, Tauk....The lobby and breakfast buffet were crowded at times. We were comfortable because we know all the tourists were vaccinated.

The bed was comfortable. The room was quiet, and clean. The room picture featured is misleading. We were in a superior room and didn't get a king as pictured. We couldn't find a temperature control in the room and when the temperature outside got into the 70's the room felt warm. The room amenities included robe, slippers, moisturizer, shampoo/conditioner (unbranded), liquid soap, tea and coffee. There was no bar soap. While the bathroom is large, the shower area felt cramped. The blackout curtains don't fully cover the windows. If you need a dark room, bring eye shades.

Breakfast is strictly a buffet. It didn't appear to change from day to day, but had a lot of variety. The fruit was fresh. Sometimes the eggs were cold. It had the hot and cold offerings you'd expect at a better hotel, plus cod liver oil! The lobby bar has a happy hour. The lunch here was outstanding. We ordered the fish & chips and a cauliflower dish that were both great.

The only newspaper provided was near check-in in Icelandic.

Hand sanitizer was widely available.

The hotel offers free shuttles to town that are actually individual taxis from 9-5. The walk into town is about 20 minutes on a paved path along the bay.

At the beginning of our stay there was no mask wearing; but with cases increasing, by the end of our stay, everyone was asked to wear a mask and even gloves while at the breakfast buffet!

Dear surrealus,

Thank you for this expanded review!
We are happy that you enjoyed your stay with us in general. I hope you tried the cod liver oil shot?
We do indeed have some groups staying with us. With so many hotels still being closed due to being unable to find staff we are accepting more groups than usually.
In our rooms the best way to control the temperature is to either use window or radiator that is under the window. All our rooms are heated by geothermal water and it is important to make sure that those radiators are turned off if the temperature is too high.
We indeed had some laws in Iceland being revised and some mask requirements are in force currently.

Best regards,
Bartek Zabel

When we arrived, there were three large travel buses that had just pulled up, and checking in was a nightmare, with huge lines. We thought it was just bad timing, but over the first two days of our stay, we learned quickly that this hotel services the large tour groups. The breakfast room each morning was absolutely packed with barely any room to sit. The hotel itself is nice, their restaurant service is good and the food quality is good, but we decided to check out two days early and move to a less busy hotel. This hotel is like an Orlando Florida or Las Vegas tourist hotel, moving tour buses in and out on an hourly basis. If you want a quite slower pace hotel this is not your hotel. Again the amenities were all good, just the service and large crowds were a bummer.

Dear,

Thank you for this review.
We do indeed have from time to time organized groups staying in our hotel, however, the check-in times for those groups are always very fast and the lines on most occasions are disappearing very fast as that makes us super-efficient to pass all the information either to tour guide or to everyone separately. I'm sorry you had to wait in line to receive your room key and I would like to assure you that this is not an everyday event.
There are also many buses driving by as our location is allowing us to have a pickup for day tours directly in front of our main entrance, without the need to go to some bus stop to catch your trip.
Our breakfast is open from 7 am to 10 am and it mostly is getting busy in the last hour. We are always ready to open up more space in one of the conference halls if we consider it necessary to make sure that no one will have to wait for their table.
I hope that during your next stay with us your stay with us you will have more family-friendly experience :)

Best regards,
Bartek Zabel

We stayed here for 3 nights prior to our tour with Lindblad/National Geographic as this is the hotel where our tour started. It looked like many tour companies (Tauck, Insight, Trafalgar) use this hotel. The room faced the lobby without windows to the outside and was dimly lit. There was no laundry service on the weekends which was very inconvenient. The breakfast that was included was good. The hotel is not located in the central area so we needed to take a taxi to/from that area as the hotel shuttle only ran until 5PM. The staff were very helpful during our stay. Prior to our stay, we had contacted them regarding where to get a COVID test, and the staff was very helpful in providing us with this information. We would have preferred to stay in a hotel in the central area, however, our tour started here.

Dear SARJKE,

Thank you for your review!
Currently, tour operators are using many hotels, and even one group can be split and stay in different places at the same time. We do have some groups and they are giving us a lot of great experience!
Of course, choosing the right room category is very important, our standard rooms are indeed facing the atrium.
We do have a free shuttle as an extra service, however, for later hours than 5 pm the walk to the city center should not take much more than 20 minutes and is very enjoyable, especially by the seaside.

I'm very grateful for mentioning the helpfulness of our staff, we are always here for you!

Although it's big in size and the lobby promises luxury and high status, we experienced very uncomfortable beds (mattresses unbelievably soft), and two tasteless meals (dinner and breakfast). Also, the lighting of the room was problematic.

Dear,

I'm sorry that your stay with us was less than exciting.
I have to say that our mattresses are often mentioned as very comfortable and this may be up to personal liking. I do personally like very hard mattresses but sleeping in Grand was always very enjoyable experience when it comes to sleep quality for many of our guests.
I would definitely like to hear more about your stay so we can improve and be ready to welcome you next time, with more to offer!

Very nice hotel. The rooms are nice and the beds are soft. The hotel is close to downtown and all the major roadways that lead out of town so you are in a very convenient spot. All the hotel employees are very nice and go out of there way to make you happy.
