Great Accommodation

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 27 Nov 2024
I am a sucker for points programs, so I generally choose Hilton hotels when available. The Konsulat was one of the best properties I’ve stayed at in the Nordics/Scandinavia. We stayed 4 nights in a Diplomat suite. The bed was perfectly comfortable, duvet was dreamy (so much so that I pulled the cover off, located the brand and purchased 2 to use at home) and the bathroom was very well appointed. Excellent blow dryer, quality products and water pressure. The room had 2 large balconies with doors we kept open all night to offset the temperature of the hotel (hubby and I intentionally keep our home around 10 degrees Celsius). Staff was very friendly and accommodating.
Only gripe - the wine selection at the bar was pretty subpar, but this seems to be a theme around Iceland.

Stick a pin in the town centre map of Reykjavik and it’ll be in the lobby of the Konsulat Hilton, so location is 11/10, the rest is 10/10

It has all the unmentionable features you’d expect of a Hilton. Impeccably clean rooms, sumptuously comfortable beds, huge spacious bathrooms with proper showers, first class fresh appetising breakfast and welcoming staff.

What isn’t Hilton is the old world charm of the place, it’s steeped in history and has a charm which the modern concrete places simply can’t achieve. You’ll love it.

The jewel in the crown however is the bath-house on the lower ground floor. A secret oasis to unwind and wash away the cold while liberating the muscles at the end of the day. Fantastic.

10/10. Highly recommended.

Reykjavik is a wonderful city to visit, the people are very friendly and helpful. The city is well-kept and clean. October was perfect to visit, this time of year when the weather turns toward the colder times in Iceland you'll find the crowds are less as we did.

Reykjavik Konsulat is a very stylish and comfortable hotel and we were very glad we chose it. Unlike some of the others we considered, whose styles were more Nordic minimal, Reykjavik Konsulat seemed warm and sophisticated with rich colors and cozy furnishings. The shower was amazing. I felt like I was at a spa. The breakfast was excellent (although expensive) and the service we received throughout the hotel was very good. I would definitely stay here again if I am lucky enough to return to Iceland.

Seriously. It's like entering a mine. Maybe dim-lit spaces are the new thing, and I just don't appreciate it. But you'll need a flashlight as you enter the lobby and seek out the reception desk!

Darkest hotel you'll ever set foot into. The entrances, and there are two, are almost like closely-guarded secrets and you can't be faulted if you miss them as you walk by outside.

We stayed one night in August, post-cruise and ahead of our flight out the following day. Efficient check-in with no line. Staff booked us a taxi to get us to the central bus station and also handled the purchase of bus tickets. (Airport taxis are ridiculous in cost and the bus was a sensible, efficient way to the to the airport.)

Hotel has a nice bar. There's a thermal spa in the basement. And our room was comfortable.

Unfortunately, the room thermostat wasn't working, or we couldn't get it to work, so it was a very hot night. We opened the windows to cool things down, but on a Saturday night there was a lot of late-night street noise.

Shower was nice. Toilet was tiny.

The room was very, very expensive by American standards. And that is a familiar story throughout Reykjavik for anything, be it a cup of coffee, meals, clothing, souvenirs or excursions.

The hotel location is great. Walking distance to shops, plenty of restaurants, Rainbow Street and about a 15-minute walk to the landmark Hallgrimskirkja Church.

Next time I'm in town I'll likely try somewhere else but can't fault the location or room quality.

Room tip: Both side of the hotel are subject to street noise if your windows are open.

Dear Frqflier,

thank you so much for taking the time to give us such a detailed review.
We have taken a look at our light settings and seen where we can make our lobby a bit brighter. Our aim is though to have a cosy warm atmosphere so we do prefer our lighting to be soft.

I am glad you found our services efficient, the bar nice and that you felt comfortable in the guestroom and in our bathouse.

The thermostat is quite slow as we don´t have AC so you were absolutely correct in opening a window, as we Icelanders do to cool down.

Even though you don´t intend to visit us again, we are grateful for you choosing to stay with us, and wish you safe and happy travels, wherever you might endeveaour.

Warm wishes from us to you,
Helga Bjork

Best location, breakfast, staff, and bathrooms! This felt like a boutique hotel though associated with Hilton. Its nestled right downtown near great restaurants, pubs, museums, famous hot dog stand right outside, and near the main marina too. The room was large, and comfortable and was the nicest of all the places we stayed. Highly recommend it to anyone coming to Reykjavik. We can't wait to return
