In many areas the sheer volume of street art/graffiti has turned buildings and walls dark black/purple (ugly), tourist shops sell trinkets made overseas (where are the local handicrafts), persistent hawkers selling everything from tissues, roses and balloons to lottery tickets. Children, adults and the medically unwell approach tourists for money and spruikers outside restaurants touting for business. An awful but necessary experience to access many of the archaeological sites and artifacts of Athens.

Ancient, yet modern. See the old and new side by side. A great place to walk around, shop, eat, drink, take lots of pictures.

Lots of activity here, it's a nice stroll. There are lots of trinket shops, but also some nice wares to be found if you are discerning enough to spot them. We found a lovely rug at "The Loom" that offered free shipping ~ it will be such a nice addition to our home.

If in Athens you must have a walk through the busy streets of the Plaka, with its alleys, souvenir shops, little churches and some great bars.
