Description: Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter. Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere. Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

Five min walk from Dam Square, off the beaten path or tourist traps and hidden from hordes of coffee shop hoppers. Family-run restaurant, very successfully experimenting with sauce and seasoning for "common" fish and meat dishes. On a good day we sat in a nice side street outside, peaceful and relaxing. We went for late lunch, had cod and salmon for main (what can be special about them, right?), very good! (Sauce and a combination of grill and oven).
Warm pear pie with fresh cream was perfect for dessert! (As well as warm waffles with thick vanilla ice cream!). The service was very good and friendly, but a bit slow (1:30hr for main and dessert). Understandable for a family business and the time of the day, was not critical. I would come again to try the other things on their menu (and repeat the pear pie!), would just factor in more time. Prices are somewhat above average for lunch (I guess it was already dinner at 15:30), but not killing: €30 pp for main, couple of beers, dessert and coffee. It was worthwhile!

Amsterdam is just crazy packed with tourists so was a bit concerned about getting a table for dinner since they don't take reservations. In the end, it wasn't a problem as plenty of seats inside. Tip: on a warm evening, probably better to sit outside as inside can get a bit stuffy. Friendly waitresses. However, only two of them serving the whole restaurant so be patient and nurse your drink. Had the lamb (not gamey for those of you who don't like the smell) with mint butter and steak (medium doneness) in raspberry sauce. Fries were value for money compared to the local standalone chippies. Portions are decent, luckily we only ordered 2 mains to share among 3 persons. Pay at the counter. Tips expected, no service charge on bill.

Ate here with the wife during our last night in the city. Right off Dam sqaure and easy to find. We ate outside which was quite nice. It's cool that there's no menu, and so the waitress just recites what they're making for the day. The food was simple, but also very good, which suited us just fine! Definitely recommend!

This is a great place for a couple to go for a nice meal. The place is small and cosy with only 15 or so tables. The service staff are really friendly and work very hard.
The menu changes every day so the service staff explain what’s in offer to you. Problem is they don’t tell you the prices until the end.
Two starters, two mains, a couple of drinks and one pudding came to 80 euros. The food was nice but not that nice for 80 euros.

Unfortunately I came to this restaurant as I was looking to have a good dining experience encouraged by good reviews. I have to say it was packed and people were waiting in lines which at first convinced me more that it was worth the wait, to find out later that all this is due to the fact that there was only one person taking the orders from all the people in the restaurant. We waited at least one hour to get a table and another hour to have our order taken. They have no menu, this poor girl supposed to take the order was reciting on every table the menu. We were very upset for the long wait especially when we were noticing that people who had seats after us were served before us. When it was about paying the bill, the woman dared asking us to add tips which was for me an insult to injury. Not to forget that we were kind of obliged to have a drink while waiting to be seated.
