Between the destroyed walls of the fortress it's difficult to imagine the past splendour of Livorno Port during Renaissance. Anyway, there're some interesting halls on the basements.

The (Fortezza Vecchia) Old Fort is just that old, and nothing else. Many places in Europe with old forts have converted them into useful areas for recreation or tourism and done well with it while preserving heritage. The old Fort here is kinda crappy and doesn't look nice or useful. Too bad because it could be so much more but right now it's worth skipping completely if you're in the area. Much nicer set up in Pisa or Florence, so don't spend too much time here.

Fortezza Vecchia (Old Fortress) is conveniently located near the cruise ship piers. We were in Livorno and did a day trip in Florence. We got back with enough time to take a quick tour of this defensive fortification. There were several earlier forts on this site, beginning with the Romans, but as it appears now, since the 1500's. The oldest surviving part is the medieval tower from the 11th century.
