The Basilica is located at Piazza Duomo. Admission is free. It's the seat of the Archbishops of Catania. It's been destroyed and rebuilt several times because of earthquakes and eruptions of Mt. Etna. It was originally constructed in 1078-1093. A must see - especially the Chapel of St. Agatha and the Latin cross ground-plan, with a nave and two aisles.

Must see Basilica when in Catania, without this blue Baroque style church Catania is nothing but small Sicilian city. You can simply enjoy the city vibes sitting in front of the cathedral.

In general Catania is dark, dirty and dreary city. In this same vein, the Cathedral de Sant Agata positioned on an open plaza a few blocks from the harbor was fairly traditional from the outside but relatively poorly light, unattractive and dreary inside. Much of the traditional religious art work was likewise unattractively dark.

I have viated many churches in Italy. It is not the most extravagant, but still is the nicest you will find in Catania. It is free to visit but i suggest paying the 3€ per person to viait the dome. You will be able to take city view pictures
