Calabona hotel is typically Italian. Lovely sea view room worth paying more for.
Very comfortable beds, clean and cared for.
Breakfast ok , dinner definitely not, we ate out every day. The food not good and the restaurant no atmosphere, depressing. The staff through out the hotel are welcoming and attentive, they make you feel comfortable and welcome.
This hotel is at the edge of a cliff, a steep walk from Alghero old town. Would suggest not suitable for elderly or disabled.
The swimming pool is lovely and just a short walk through the back gates of the hotel to the small but beautiful private beach. Careful of the jelly fish.

Room tip: Pay extra for sea view on 3rd floor

Hotel Calabona was a lovely hotel about a 20 min walk from the old town of Alghero which was a really enjoyable stroll and very picturesque. The hotel itself was clean and the staff were so friendly and helpful. A bar just a few yards along the coast was a brilliant place to watch the sun go down. The food let it down somewhat, although it was hit and miss some of the meals were fine and others mediocre at best. Also food could have done to be hotter. We loved the private little beach cove outside the hotel. The bar could possibly do with being a little cosier.

I was recently conducting a review of practices at work and we discussed the easiest things we could improve. We called it "the low hanging fruit" . This is a lovely hotel, you can read about all the positives in the many preceding reviews.
So what is the low hanging fruit... coffee or tea after dinner. The machine is there from breakfast, just switch it on.
At breakfast the "Brits" like a cup of tea, make sure the water in the teapot is hot, not tepid.
My biggest problem is the lack of ventilation in the bathroom but that is not low hanging.
I support all the positive comments, especially about the staff, but little things put the icing on the cake.

nice sunset and starters. Food was poor for a 4star hotel. if like that at weddings then it's quite terrific. swordfish carpaccio with no taste at all, raw risotto and un-seasoned sea bass fillet. dessert? sobertoo lemon! isn't even a dessert!
the tent is nice and service was good.
swimming pool quite small. not really good looking
hotel location far from town (good 40min if not more walking). on a deep end like the last building, don't feel really safe to walk at night to/from hotel

Room tip: event tent is nice

Calabona, Direttore at Calabona Hotel Alghero Sardegna, responded to this reviewResponded 29 September 2017

Dear Filipa,

Thank you very much for spent your time writing about your experience.

Thank you for appreciating the venue, the service and the sunset.

The mentioned dinner menu has been chosen by the Conference Organizers, during a menu test where various options were available. They selected the dishes those in their opinion would more easily meet the different needs, considering that guests were from many countries with different gastronomic habits.
Alternatives for people with special dietary needs were also available during dinner.

I'm sorry to learn that you didn't completely agreed with their menu choices, but I understand that it was not easy for them (and for us) to satisfy over 220 people who clearly had different desires.

If you will attend a wedding reception in our venue, I am sure your judgment will be fully positive as those expressed by everyone who has already participated.

I understand that a 25 mt x 12 mt swimming pool (it means 82 x 39,50 feet) for you is quite small, but it is one of the largest, perhaps the largest, available in Alghero.

Best Regards

Most if not all the reviews on TA are about right in my opinion, the more critical ones might be seeking too much for the price; it is not at 5 star prices and a reasonable deal at this level. Had we not had the superior room I might not be saying that.

So all I have to say is there were two issues, one the hotel can do little about, the other might be solved more easily. The first is the British (and to some extent other north European nations) use of the pool. Italians are hard wired to shower BEFORE getting in the pool, we seem not to be too fussed to leave behind an oil slick as an 18 stone sweaty body is heaved into the pool without any thought of showering first. The clue is that in the UK chlorine levels in pools is much higher, as you sew..... I think the Calabona Pool chlorine levels were quite high as a result. Thanks for that! It is written on the pool rules - that no one reads, perhaps the hotel can emphasize it on their web site? Either way, I know it is a part of the British thing to be considered the dirty people of Europe..... and we are sure keeping that one alive. The second is smoking, which is allowed on the balconies. Our room was regularly filled with other peoples smoke, wafting up from below or the side, sometimes at 7.00 am and every evening. I thought it a disgusting smell, and even with the windows closed it still came in. Smokers - smoke somewhere else! (as in 300 yards away) It is disgusting that we have to breathe in your second hand pollution. The hotel might consider corralling smokers in a particular area perhaps, but difficult to know what to do, if the whole hotel is a no smoking area it might affect business. But it is a real issue (if you do not smoke).

we stayed for 2 weeks so had a good feel for the hotel. I reinforce the often said comment, the staff are wonderful.
