I wandered in here thinking it was just an old castle, but actually it houses a superb collection of medieval and renaissance art.
I knew a little about renaissance art (Bellini, Raphael, etc) – but these were artists I’d never heard of: Bernardo Strozzi, Ghirolamo Dai Libri, Pietro Bernardi, Francesco Morone and others, who were active in Verona – all good artists, but little-known outside Italy.
If you're willing to climb stairs, there are walkways along the walls and into some of the towers of the castle.

This 14th-century castle was built by the Scaligeri (also known as della Scala) family that ruled Verona in the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle lies on the bank of the river Adige and is connected to the opposite bank by a picturesque pedestrian bridge, the Ponte Scaligero, that can be viewed from the castle. The cavernous interior of the castle now houses Verona's civic art collection, which includes a number of masterpieces. In the castle, one can still find some original frescoes with the family crest - a ladder ("scala") held by two dogs.

About a 20 min. walk from the Verona Porta Nuova train station or an easy bus ride. The museum houses an impressive collection of items including sarcophagi, Renaissance paintings, Roman sculpture... The museum is also a must see for those interested in architecture as Carlo Scarpa renovated it in the 60s and his treatment of details when joining old to new is impressive, as is the way the art is displayed.

A must see for history enthusiasts. A nice blend of medieval meets Scarpa. If you are a purist this may throw you off but give it a chance to settle on you. The frescos on the third floor are rich and the way the paintings were hung cantilevered off the wall made enjoying the rich colors of the frescos just as easy as the spiritual art.
