Did a 2 night stay in Verona before moving onto Lake Garda (which is only 20 mins on the train to Desenzano at the base of Garda). Chose this hotel after all the consistently good reviews. On arrival at Verona airport, took the shuttle bus to Verona Railway Station (about 10 mins) then as it was early evening decided to walk to the hotel which took about 20 mins with luggage. Checking in was easy with cheerful helpful staff. Our standard double was on the first floor facing a quiet internal courtyard. The Arena was just steps away and all that Verona has to offer within walking distance. We thought Verona was beautiful, like Venice without the canals and mass tourist invasion. Decided to do 'Juliet's house and balcony' even though we said we wouldn't. It's probably where the majority of the crowds of tourists and day-trippers go, but not that expensive (under 10 euros for both of us, but we did flash our over 60s cards).
Breakfast the next morning had an excellent choice of savoury and sweet and nicely presented in the back room with a feature wall of plants. The hotel although in a very old back street is contemporary in design - nicely done. We dined out in the evenings at Greppia and La Griglia - enjoyed good food as both are reviewed well on Tripadvisor. For a cheap lunch, we went to La Tradision (a cicchetti/wine bar) 2 streets away on Via Oberdan (No.6) buzzing, very popular with the locals, shared a platter of meats and cheese for 11 euros and had a few glasses of wine - great!
All in all, we had a wonderful time in Verona and were so glad we picked this hotel as it is perfect for soaking up the atmosphere of beautiful Verona. Mind you, if we were ever to go back, I would upgrade to a better room next time as even though our room was fine, clean and comfortable it was a little cramped and claustrophic, but then we did book a standard double - quiet though at the back.More
