You will see thousands on monuments around Italy dedicated to thousands of famous persons. They could be of anything, but one thing in common is the architecture of the time. They are not mostly abstract but depict sculptures and ideas that you can appreciate and marvel.
This one is no different. The inscription is simple- A Cristoforo Colombo. La Patria. It's a massive monument and well dedicated to someone who certainly deserves the accolade.
Go and have a look.

Right by the Piazza Principe Railway Station, an impressive tribute to the City’s most famous son. Seen by every commuter and on a very busy traffic intersection. Good photo opportunity, but not worth a special visit.

Columbus monument in Genoa was erected in 1862 after the death of the author-sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini. Columbus stands on a pedestal where are seated statues, representing Piety, Science, Constancy and Prudence. Four bass-reliefs are between them: Columbus before the Council of Salamanca. Columbus erecting a cross on the first land discovered. Reception of Columbus at Barcelona, by the Kings of Spain on his return from the first voyage. Columbus in chains, returning to Spain. The pathetic inscription is located in the center of the pedestal: A CRISTOFORO COLOMBO LA PATRIA ("to Christopher Columbus, the Fatherland"). In General, the monument looks heavyweight and too pathos.

Located outside the railroad station it is an impressive statue but does not need more than a minute of your time. Watch out for the aggressive drivers and motorcyclists circling the statue.
