Probably the best kept secret of Cinque Terre! The location of Eremo is superb. It's set on a hill overlooking Monterosso (about 10 mins by car to the Old Town) with a beautiful view. Finding it was a bit of a challenge and we kept on driving back and forth past the road to the property, but in retrospect, the hard-to-find location is probably what keeps it exclusive! It's actually located almost at the crossroads of the roads leading down to the Old and the New Towns. And the name plate for the hotel is discrete. The access from the road leads you along a narrow path atop a spur. You drive for about 600 metres before coming to an electronic gate that opens to a cobbled driveway that takes you all the way to Eremo. The property is intimate and cosy. This was a monastery for Benedictine monks and a church (the church still exists on the property!), and is said to have been built in the 1200s. Elizabetha has done an amazing job renovating and restoring the property. There are 5 rooms with the one upstairs (you have to climb 6 tiny, very steep stairs) has 2 bedrooms and a sitting room so that's idea for a family. All rooms are well-appointed, and attention is paid to the smallest detail. The front lawn was our favourite part of the property. Breakfasts are served there and each table is treated to a glorious view of the glittering blue of the Mediterranean. The fact that Eremo sits high above Monterroso also means the guests are insulated from the sounds from the village, and the tranquility and peacefulness is its biggest attraction. Every breakfast was for us a treat. The spread was generous, and the food was delicious. The breads and pastries were fresh, the cold cuts wonderful, and the juices freshly squeezed. Coffee is everything to me, and Eremo's sole male staff, a lovely older gentleman (whose name I regret not getting) painstakingly brewed each pot for me, instead of allowing me to get coffee out of the coffee machine.

Only one negative - there was no airconditioning. However, this is a heritage property after all, and the restrictions that have been placed on what the owners are/are not able to do must have prevented airconditioning to be provided. Fans are available. We were fortunate that even though this was early July, the evening temperatures were cool enough so our stay was still very comfortable.

I was originally hesitant to write a review because Eremo Della Maddalena is such a special place it should remain a secret gem for local knowledge only. Located down a ¼ mile secret dirt driveway, Maddalena opens on a promontory point high above Monterosso al Mare with an expansive scenic view of Monterosso, the sea and the surrounding mountains. The 13th century monastery is surrounded by terraces of olive trees and vineyards. If you need to escape from it all, you will find Maddalena a peaceful sanctuary of quiet and tranquility. There is a lovely pool which is well appointed. If you need more activity the mountain hiking trail is immediately accessible from the property or Monterosso is a very short 10-minute drive. Elizabetta is a delightful hostess with great knowledge of the area. The rooms and bathrooms are well appointed and lovely. You will find this Cinqueterra bed and breakfast a five-star location and feel so lucky have had a chance to experience it.
