We visited Rome a few years back and saw the Colosseum, Forum, Palatine Hills, Vatican Museum, St Peter's, Pantheon, Trevi, etc. so we were looking for a less touristy place to go prior to starting a Rick Steves southern Italy tour. The Villa Borghese was a great choice. The main challenge is that you MUST book your 2 hour visit at least 6 weeks prior as the gallery limits the amount of visitors (which actually made our visit quite pleasant). We were unable to get the 3 o'clock reservation even 7 weeks ahead so we opted for the 5 o'clock to 7 o'clock slot which actually worked out quite well. Enjoyed walking around the gardens prior to our gallery visit. We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes prior to your reservation and be sure to pick up an audio guide as the explanations are why you're visiting. Stayed the full 2 hours with plenty of time to go back and take photos as the gallery emptied. Out before dark in plenty of time to catch a taxi back to dinner in our Trevestere hotel neighborhood.
