Reading through the reviews, we had high expectations from the place and were looking forward to celebrate our anniversary with some great food. After having received our food, the only possible explanation is that we either had the worst luck in the world or the reviews here are fake. During all our time in Italy, this has to have been the worst cooked calamari and octopus we have ever encountered.

When asking the waitress, we were told it was so chewy due to it being fresh... If we didn’t live next to the Mediterranean and never had seafood before, maybe I would have bought the explanation... stay away!

Our first meal in Salerno has much to live up to. Visit Mariterraneo, in an atmospheric old town lane for delicious seafood, fantastic service and relaxed environment. The squid appetiser and ricotta dessert were exceptional!

a very pleasant experience in a restaurant located in the old part of town. The interior is in keeping with the original architecture with vaulted ceilings and interesting white-washed rooms and ante rooms decorated with antique furnishings.
We were on a Groupon offer of an alla carta and a bottle of wine for 2 people costing €49.90, less than half price.
The menu was varied and included only local produce which were well cooked and presented with attention to detail and in a creative manner.
The service was attentive and the staff knowledgable.
A location to recommend for all seasons as there's also an appealing terrace outside for al fresco dining during the summer months.

I wish I could keep this place a secret, but since you're here already, I'm happy to tell you that Mariterraneo is, in a word, utterly charming. (Okay, that's two words, but still...)
We found it thanks to a friendly imp of a cobbler, who led us here through back alleys from his workshop/store near the Duomo, and went off to finish making our sandals while we dined (thank you, Paolo!).
If you make your way through those back alleys too, you won't find pretentious "gourmet dining" -- you'll find great local food, wonderful people, a friendly relaxed atmosphere, and, except for you, nary a foreign tourist in sight. This is a place to savor, to linger, to relax, and to get a real feel for a lovely city.
In short, it's a place for a perfect evening, and a large part of what made me fall in love with Salerno.

We stumbled upon this restaurant along our journey through Salerno. We were looking for Italian cuisine with an authentic feel and atmosphere. The food was superb and so was our experience. Our waitress did not speak English but an English menu and the food compensated for it. We shared and enjoyed fresh caught clams, and the best calamari and spaghetti in the city. They also produce their own wine. We ordered a bottle. Very tasty and affordable.
