We were looking for the above, whilst on holiday in Matera in early September. It is very close to The Sassi di Matera which are ancient cave dwellings in the Italian city of Matera. We had our first coffee and cakes before visiting the caves (a must for everybody). On returning from the caves we headed straight for the Albergo and were welcomed again for another sample of excellent hospitality and more coffee and cakes. Do not miss this opportunity if you are a visitor to Matera.

We stayed here on a tour and it was delightful. The Hotel was once a wealthy home and has some great character. Centrally located and a great view overlooking the Sassi in the evening (find the small roof deck on the side of the hotel). And the staff was very friendly and helpful. And Matera! Unbelievable!

This place was really easy to get to and from. It's close to the Sassi caves area but within the modern town. It's also near restaurants and gelaterias as well.

There are some fairly spacious common areas though artificially lit. On my floor there was even a piano and medieval armor..

The hotel was quite clean and furnishings seemed new, if not perhaps somewhat out of date.

The only negative point was that my bed was quite small for a tall Northern European person.

There was even a small minibar.

Breakfast was very basic but adequate. For the price I paid I did not expect more.

I have stayed 5 nights at Albergo Italia in July. It's a beautiful family run hotel at the center of the old town, very close to the restaurants, caffees but also the main street where people just walk around during the evenings. Hotel is spacious and beautiful, I really enjoyed my huge room with big windows, lovely shutters and a stunning view at the church. Everything was very clean and decorated in traditional italian style. I just had a great stay there and would recommend hotel to everyone.

Very nice hotel, centrally located in old area of Matera. Room had a balcony overlooking the main street. Easy access to shops, food, and within easy walking distance of the Sassi Caves. Owners were onsight. Breakfast was very good. They are adding a restaurant which should be open in late 2016. A good choice!

Room tip: Rooms away from the street are quieter
