We booked a taxi tour around the rock, and Jimmi our driver gave a great commentary of what, and where we were going to visit next, and well worth the fare
Charles our driver was cheerful and informative. Taking the taxi meant that we looked over some but by no means all the sights - no doubt there are traffic restrictions. Within those we had a good taster of the monkeys, Pillars of Hercules, Great Siege Tunnels and best of all St Michael's Cave. Recommended, especially as the attractions are a fair walk up and down from each other.
Carlos collected us from the rain and took my family and me (2 adults & 2 children) and another family into his cab up & around the rock. We visited St Michaels caves and the castle where he provided us with a running commentry. When we arrived at a monkey feeding point we were a little apprehensive after hearing that the monkeys can attack you, but he put us at ease and even invited us to feed them which was great. Unfortunately due to the weather it was difficult to see anything at the look out points towards north Africa but I would definately take the taxi ride again in better weather.
Total cost was about £120 for 4 of us (Youngest was "free") and we spent best part of 2 hours touring.
Came across the taxi tour representatives opposit the Tourist Information desk on the Gibraltar side of the border. I already intended to go to the Moorish Castle, but it seemed logical to travel with the taxi tour people instead. They had their own desk there and seemed professional.
Our tour had four stops:
1: Pillars of Hercules viewpoint - where you see Ceuta (Spanish exclave), Morocco and Tarifa at the same time. Really good spot to see the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea.
2: St. Michael’s Cave - beautiful cave turned into a concert hall. Possibly not great for disabled access; unless they have lifts installed?
3: Top of the Rock - where you see loads of monkeys and great views of Gibraltar city
4: Siege Tunnels - very long, snaking tunnel boared into the rock, used for mounting specially designed cannons. Uninterrupted views of La Línea, Spain available just outside the tunnel entrance.
We passed the Moorish Castle on the way down. It was nice to see it close up.
Our guide was called Stanley. He is a resident of Gibraltar, knew all about history and dayly life and was a really nice fellow. He made the tour fun!
A monkey grabbed my arm whilst I was standing next to a railing. It startled me, but he was using me for balance as he rushed along the railing top. They look cute, but I am a little wary of them. Treat them with respect and do not feed or touch them.
Three of us walked to the cable car intending to go up to the top! There was a queue, and GTA taxi 'reps' were telling us how much quicker their tours were, and how much better it was than the cable car. We were discussing our options when a loud lady interrupted and repeated loudly, directly to us, why they were better than the cable car. We walked away and looked at the map, and were again rudely interrupted by a rep. saying the map was theirs and how good the tours were - he got a similar response back! He was obnoxious. We spoke to another chap, got the £30 cash each, and returned, by which time this fellow had gone. The lady and other rep. kept us waiting 'trying to get a couple more visitors to fill the minibus'. We could have done the cable car in this time despite the queue. Frankly they came over as just not interested, and were very unprofessional and non-businesslike. In the end we left after waiting 45 minutes. Since we live not far along the coast in Spain, we will return another day, and certainly will NOT be using or going near this shower of 'touts' - which is how they came over. Most unsatisfactory!
