firstly, i should say i'd never heard of casa batllo before coming to barcelona. casa mila yes, but not casa battlo. it was only because of trip advisor that my interest was piqued. and a friend suggested casa batllo was definitely the pick ahead of casa mila.
opinions varied, but one hour seemed to be the average length of stay most people suggested. my wife and i stayed for two.
we had already been to sagrada familia and park guell before coming here, so we were already gaudi enthusiasts. this was the cherry on the cake.
like so much of barcelona, managing queues and crowds plays a significant part in your ability to enjoy what you're doing. this house is enjoyed by walking around the various rooms and listening to the audio guide provided as well as the virtual reality aspect - it's really quite cool. the tour is numbered, so you simply follow the path and numbers around the house. but if you're doing this with thousands of other people i can imagine it wouldn't be that enjoyable.
so tip #1 is plan to go either in the morning before it gets busy or later in the afternoon/early evening. the house also has a lot of stairs to climb so it's worth being aware of that too, in case you're not so mobile. there is an internal elevator to get you to the upper floors should you need it.
i suppose at the end of the day you're either in awe and amazed by the deign or non-plussed. i've ready quite a few negative reviews saying they just don't get it - fair enough. our experience was nothing short of total amazement for gaudi's vision and design and we wished like nothing else to be able to live in that house. the design elements in the light well alone were simply amazing.
but whilst the house itself ticks all the boxes, i think the way the site is managed as a tourist destination is handled excellently too. the audio guide and virtual tour were superb - without them you're just walking around blindly marvelling at what you see.
