Beautifully restored building containing the hall in which the Peace of Munster was sworn in and consequently the Netherlands was recognised as an independent country. Being inside this very hall is breathtaking for a Dutchmen or anyone believing in the right of self-determination.
Nevertheless, there could be more props and information provided to turn it into a truly enlightening landmark
Nice place to visit but don’t expect to be here more than 20 minutes. Besides the facade and the “Friedenssaal” there’s not a lot to see here. In the Friedenssaal, a few objects are on display but there’s nobody to tell you something about that or the room except for a small sign and a recorded tape which is played all day.
With a typical Gothic façade, Muenster's town hall is a mid-14th century edifice. The characteristic gable was rebuilt true to the original in the 1950s. In 2015, it was awarded the European Heritage Label as the "Site of the Peace of Westphalia", which seems to be such a well fitting name for a place like Muenster, mainly a University and residential city where the number of bicycles exceed the number of people and where the old town is beautifully surrounded by a park.
Yes a truly historic hall, TheThirty years War is overlooked outside of Germany, but once you step inside and pick up a guide book you learn how this hall became the focal point to end war. Well worth visiting. Good pubs right close by afterwards as well.
Not uncommon for Germany to have fantastic facades on their buildings and this is no exception. Great to see
