Visited 13/14 Dec. for christmas markets. The hotel is right opposite the Cathedral - our room was a Cathedral View Suite. It had a very large living area with two balcony windows overlooking the cathedral. Also had TV with access to BBC news and ITV. Also had a tablet with hotel info. and connection to free wifi. Living room had two fold out beds - these were comfortable. A large bathroom connected the living area to the main bedroom. Main bedroom had large cupboard space, safe, TV and free minibar. The room was very warm heated by radiators. The bedding was plain white, with a good duvet and pillows very comfortable. The toiletries were super - really lovely bathroom and power shower. The carpet could use a clean but the room itself was clean. It was like staying in an old style apartment and was very comfortable. However, my main delight with this hotel was the super friendly staff. All made an extra effort to make you feel welcome. All spoke English and went the extra mile to help us with two young children. The only down side was the very expensive breakfast so we chose to go to Cafe Reichard which is just across the road and much better value, with excellent food.

I stayed in this hotel with my wife for three nights (12th-14th Dec) as a Birthday surprise coinciding with visiting the many xmas markets.
The hotel is in a great location for visiting Cologne, just across the road from the Dom, train station and many shops also it's only a 10 min walk to the Rhine. The Xmas markets are on your doorstep and you can catch a mini train across the road from the hotel if you want a tour of the markets to save your legs....
The hotel felt very festive when walking into the lobby with an impressive large Xmas tree right in the middle. All of the staff are all very welcoming and accommodating and the hotel has a real traditional feel about it which we both loved.
The room we had was a standard double room on the 5th floor, we didn't have much of a view as this was an internal view room but this was possibly not a bad thing as the bells from the Dom were quite loud and we could imagine this is only amplified in the front facing rooms. The room was lovely and spacious, the bed was slightly firm for our liking but soon accommodated with a mattress topper at our request. The complimentary mini bar is a nice touch as well.
We had a drink in the hotel bar which had a nice cosy feel to it, we could not understand some of the previous negative reviews about the atmosphere in the bar?
If visiting Cologne again we would not hesitate to book this hotel again and I would highly recommend it.

The ambiance was amazing, the food was outstanding and the staff were exceptional.

We were very impressed with the service provided, especially towards our 3 year old. There was even a junior robe and slippers.

We all enjoyed the Christmas trimmings in the foyer. Amd the view of the cathedral.

A perfect location for a visit to the markets and the cathedral. It was a pity that our stay was just a stop-over.

We chose this hotel for its location and were not disappointed as in that respect it is perfect, a stone's throw from the Dom, the main railway station and shopping areas. On arrival Reception staff took time to actually take us to our room rather than just give us the key and point as is more often the case, though this could have been something to do with the fact that, like a previous reviewer we had a room on the 6th floor and the lift only goes to the 5th! (the floor is accessed using a further lift or stairs - which could prove a little confusing for the first time visitor). The room had everything you would expect at the price level including complimentary internet access (a Samsung tablet is provided) mini-bar (soft-drinks and beer only) and infotainment system. The bathroom was marble and large with two basins and shower over the bath which was superb in operation, though a big 'no-no' for me was the amount of mildew around the bath/shower tiling. The main issue with the room though was the heating - which didn't heat the room at all (our visit was in December). Yes we should have reported it when we arrived at 3pm but foolishly thought a miracle would happen and the system might spring into life by the time we returned later that evening. Sadly none did. We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant so cannot comment but The Piano Bar deserves a mention, as, though small, it has great charm and courteous, attentive staff. Overall? The heating issue I'm sure was a one-off which had we been a little less naive could have been resolved, and certainly wouldn't put us off returning.

My wife and I came to Cologne to see the Christmas markets and to start our journey down the Rhine River to end in Basel Switzerland. We were very much looking forward to our time in Cologne and especially at this hotel since it was right next to the cathedral. I asked for a suite with a view of the cathedral and I was given one that has a spectacular view! That's the best part of this suite. Otherwise the street noise is very loud and it lasts well into the early morning hours. There is a bar next door and the local police do nothing to supervise the drunken inhabitants that spill out as late as 330 in the morning screaming and yelling all the way. On top of that we hear the buses and cars go by at all hours of the night. Finally our suite, which is made up of rooms 301 and 302 is right next to the elevator and it too groans all night long waking us up.

The living room looks like it is almost empty. The furniture consists of two armchairs & a very uncomfortable little settee and a desk with another uncomfortable chair. The little round table is dirty and was never properly cleaned before we arrived. I can't imagine that this is the way they furnish their suites elsewhere in this hotel! It is absolutely the worst suite I've ever stayed in. We discussed the situation with the concierge, and he assured us they have many other suites that are much more sumptuous and are furnished either in traditional or a modern fashion. Unfortunately, the room we had is very spartan mostly because it's one of the oldest in the hotel.

The bed itself is comfortable but as I said earlier being right on the street it's very difficult to have a good night's sleep.

Elsewhere, this hotel is quite attractive. The lobby is beautiful and the two restaurants are quite nice. The staff is friendly and engaging, and I hope that our stay is just an anomaly for this hotel. If it wasn't for the wonderful staff, I would have rated our experience two stars at the most.

I'll review the restaurant Hansen Stubs separately. It was quite nice.

Dear CoachDave37,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your impressions about your stay with us.

We deeply regret that we could not reach your expactations and would like to apologize for the inconveniences.
Please allow me to mention that due to our very central location right to the Central Station and the City with it's bars and restaurants there is a lot of public traffic. Although we do offer different room types with the possibility of view to our quiet courtyards,

Regarding your advise of the furnishment I would like to assure you that we are taking your feedback very seriously. We are renovating and updating our rooms steadily and will take your comment as a chance to improve ourself.

Beside, I am very delighted that you have been pleased with our public area and our staff and it would be our pleasure to welcome you back and regain your trust in the service and quality of the Excelsior Hotel Ernst.

With best regards,
