Overnight in Toulouse

Review of Wilson Square
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 Jan 2020
Very friendly and helpful staff. Extremely comfortable bed and pillows. Everything was very clean. The room was very quiet, even in the morning. The place feels healthy : not hot and stuffy like some hotels.
The icing on the cake was the breakfast which was amazing : organic eggs to hard boil, ham, cheese, two different fruit juices, organic arabica coffee, delicious muesli and cornflakes with a selection of almonds, dried cranberries, goji berries, prunes and all sorts of lovely things which you could add to them. Pyrenees yoghurts, à wide selection of teas, fresh fruit, good quality jams and honeys to choose from and fresh bread and patisseries.

This hotel is very much a budget hotel but charges a mid-range price. It advertises A/C but there wasn't any. My room was not well cleaned, dead bugs, etc and housekeeping never replaced towels - just took my wet ones from the floor and hung them up - they were still wet when I returned. The shower was so small I couldn't close the door. The lift only holds one person at a time, though this is typical for Europe. The location is fantastic but for you 20-30 Euro more you can stay at the Novotel down the street which is what colleagues of mine did because they were dissatifsied with this one. Also, the walls are very thin - you hear everything your neighbors do.

central hotel, very close to victor hugo market. Bed was comfy, clean bathroom, reception staff very friendly. Great value for location etc. 5 minute walk from centre, close to metro, busy street but soundproofed windows so not a problem.

The hotel is in a great location right in the heart of Toulouse. The central square is just a 5-minute walk away, the area is buzzing with restaurants and bars, the metro station Jean-Jaures is just a minute away, the airport bus stop (Jeanne d'Arc) is 5 minutes away.

The staff was cheerful, the room clean, the mattress very good. The air condition worked well.

However, the rooms are outdated and very noisy at night. The hotel website says they are renovated and soundproof - but it's not true. There is a noisy bar across the street (which seems to have the longest opening times of any bar in the vicinity), and the noise gets into the room even through closed windows. And according to the fire escape plan, nearly all rooms face the same direction, so there is no chance getting a "quiet" room here.

There were no free power sockets in the "recently renovated" room - I had to unplug the desk lamp in order to recharge my mobile phone. The only thing that was clearly renovated was the bed - it was really, really good.

There are no key cards, but bulky room keys, and no light switchs near the bed.

The automated outside doors only operate when there is reception staff present. There is no way to open them even if you have your room key. While the reception is occupied 24h, sometimes the employee has to walk away for a short time, and you cannot enter until he gets back - the sliding doors will simply not open.

I still think it is worth the price (nearby hotels with nice rooms cost almost 2x as much). But one should keep in mind that you get what you pay for - the building is outdated, the rooms are not nearly as nice as even in modern 2-star hotels.

Room tip: Ask for the highest floor possible - should have less outside noise.

It's a typical! French Two Star hotel with a couple of things going for it. Location is great. And staff is cheerful and helpful. AC worked just fine and towels were changed every day. So you overlook the tiny shower stall and the nick's in the wallpaper and that sort of stuff. If you want more, pay more.

The hotel is within walking distance of train station, metro, trams and all tourist sights. The road is quiet at night, but with good selection of restaurants, bars etc. Staff couldn't have been more helpful. An authentic French city hotel, with no frills, at a bargain price.

Room tip: We were in 28, which was on a corner so the bathroom and bedroom had natural light.
