This was a disaster from start to finish. Two waiting staff were working, which should really be plenty for the 15-ish two-person tables that are in there. However, they had absolutely no idea how to tend to a restaurant.
I arrived 5 minutes before the booking, and was seated at my table. My wife arrived 5 minutes after. We sat and waited for 10 minutes before a drinks order was taken and then a further 15 minutes for them to arrive (it was two soft drinks, not exactly cocktails!).
When we then ordered food, it was a further 30-minute wait for anything to arrive.
A quick note for the staff... with an open kitchen, it's quite easy to see when the kitchen isn't firing anything, and even easier to see when there's no chefs in there, which was most of the time...
Watching the food come out of the kitchen two plates at a time every 5-6 minutes or so wasn't exactly the idea of tapas.
Almost every item on the menu could be pre-prepared so that it only takes a few minutes to finish off on each order.
After 30 minutes, a plate of meatballs arrived. They were fine - nothing good or bad to say about them!
The waitress then apologised for the wait and asked if we'd like any complimentary bread. We said 'we've already ordered bread which hasn't arrived yet' to which she replied 'well... would you like more bread?' and then my favourite bit 'we're on a real backlog tonight'... a backlog on bread is the first I've heard of.
(Side note, bread was stale... inexcusable when Pollen is downstairs)
After a miserable 1hr15 in the restaurant, we decided to leave. Still got charged the 10% service fee, though I'm not sure what for.
Would advise anyone in the area to go to Nell's next door for a decent pizza, or alternatively Yum Cha around the corner is pretty good too.
I was introduced to this amazing venue in the summer, by a friend, in July of 2022 soon after it opened. I am so very please to have been taken, as it is, a little hidden away and you could easily miss it on a casual stroll. Do seek it out, it's great. Go to the back of the garden in Kampus until you see a slope coming down from your left, go up the slope and there it is. A nice outdoor seating area with seats inside too, it was so good that we went back a day or two later as well. Mediterranean-type light bites and some superb wines. Service was both friendly and efficient, love this place.
