Description: "Deagh bhiadh, deagh bheannachd" Well fed, well blessed. It's this sense of Hebridean hospitality that makes Café Gandolfi such an incredible long standing institution in the Glasgow scene. Opened in 1979, and pioneering the Merchant City into becoming the hub of bars and restaurants that it is today, Gandolfi is a truly well loved and frequented corner of Glasgow. From the main café with its iconic Tim Stead furniture downstairs, the hidden treasure bar up in the attic boasting gorgeous cocktails and atmosphere, to the glamorously sleek Gandolfi Fish two doors up with its adjoining little sibling Fish To Go, this little section of the Merchant City looks set to continue keeping the bar toweringly high when it comes to all things good food, good wine and great hospitality.

When we mentioned we were going to Cafe Gandolfi, our Glaswegian friends were very enthusiastic. They all seemed to have fond memories of the place, and it's clearly a Glasgow institution. Sadly it didn't quite live up to our expectations. It was fine, with good service, ok food and nice enough surroundings. At over £100 for two starters, two mains and the cheapest wine on the list, it seemed a bit overpriced.

Cullen skink, followed by the smoked haddie - extremely tasty food. Nice decor and wooden furniture. Not the cheapest option for a quick lunch though.

Used to spend a lot of time here as a student way back in the day and try to pop in for lunch whenever I’m back in Glasgow. It’s comforting, reassuring and always excellent. The caramel shortbread is as gorgeous as ever. The sea trout today was superb. Til the next time.....

For me, Cafe Gandolfi is all about the tranquil top floor bar. Choons, vibe, ambience. No stress. No nonsense. No fakery. No problem. Cool artwork for sale. Cool beers on tap. Cool friendly staff. Nailed.

The ground floor restaurant on the other hand feels tired. Dated. It smelt unclean. Like the night before. And the overall impression is of a faded Glasgow institution that hasn’t moved with times. Nostalgic and past it’s best. Underwhelming and in desperate need of a deep clean and a revamp.

A pleasant night out with friends.
A good choice on the menu. Well cooked enjoyable cuisine presented by friendly staff.
I did feel, however, that the food was a little overpriced.
