It is unusual that the smell in a present day pub manages to be worse than toilet bleach but this pub manages it. The urine smell from the Gents toilets was so strong - mixed with cleaning fluid smell - when we visited that we left almost immediately. Absolutely horrendous.

Visited for lunch. Staff friendly and offered to halve VERY large fish & chips to suit our appetites. However, chips were very over cooked and dark brown in appearance. Can only describe food as very average. Beer fine. The hand drier in the gents loo did not appear to have had its statutory safety test. Two large screws protruded from the bottom of our table which we’re capable of causing an injury to the aware. Don’t think we’ll grace it with our presence again!

We dropped in here for a pint after walking the wall, and we weren't disappointed.
A lovely old pub with friendly staff, real ale and a good menu. Full marks for an authentic old pub.

It is a quaint place and located in one of the oldest building in York. We had the fish and chips and found them to be very good. Can't recommend the mussy peas though. beer was good.

We called in here for drinks and to keep out of the cold when walking around York City Centre. We also had a booking at the nearby Jorvik Experience.
What a lovely pub. Old World appearance from the outside. Beautiful old , traditional décor on the interior. Very cosy and comfortable , with subdued lighting. Service was excellent and we enjoyed our drinks. The big regret was not having the time to eat here. Food looked sensational and played on the taste buds. This was the nicest Pub that we visited in York. I will certainly have a Meal here on any future visit.
