Owner description: Dating back to medieval times, this splendid Church of England cathedral features magnificent 14th- and 15th-century stained glass, stonework and elaborate tombs.

Although the cost of entrance is £11 for an adult the money is being well spent on restoration and preservation. The cathedral from the outside is majestic, even more so inside. Make sure you visit the octagonal chapter house within, with its unusual gargoyles and sculpted heads above the stone seats. Also the undercroft is most interesting giving a comprehensive look at York Minster from its Roman beginnings to the present day. It is a perfect place to learn some history.

The fee of £11.00 for Adult entry was shocking enough, and then a further fee of £5 for the Tower tour, I was expecting something special, however I was bitterly disappointed. The Tower tour, was not in fact a tour, with no visible volunteer to offer facts or ask questions, we were just hoarded up to the Tower, left to look around and then left to go back down on our own. There were very few visible volunteers to ask questions. Not worth the money.

Thoroughly enjoyed the visit to the Minster. Both its size and construction are impressive. Be sure to take advantage of the free guided tour which is included in the entrance fee.

Our guide Ian, was exceptional. He was so knowledgeable, witty and funny and kept everyone engaged throughout the tour. He told us all the stories of the history of the Minster, the three fires that shaped the history and the reconstruction efforts that followed each one – including the phenomenal projects to rebuild the tower and to repair the stained glass windows. You would totally miss a ton of important and fascinating facts about the Minster if you did not take the tour.

Make sure to take a walk along the city walls from Petergate to Monkgate Bar for great spots from which to take photos of the Minster.

I recommend booking online in advance in order to get expedited entrance and to avoid the lines. You actually pay slightly less if you book this way versus standing in line. There were supposed to be staff outside to find people with fast track entry and take them in. This was not so when we visited. We had to have one of our party hold our spot in line and the other go inside and pass the line to figure out the system. After first being told there was no such thing as fast track, the employee then came back to us and admitted he was wrong and we got to bypass the line. So, be persistent!
