Stayed here with our friends on a 3 night deal celebrating my husband’s 70th birthday.

The hotel is in lovely location and our upgraded room had views of Lake Windermere. The hotel staff were friendly, efficient and extremely helpful throughout our stay. The buffet breakfast was good and you could order poached eggs if required. The evening meals were excellent, particularly the 7 course taster menu which we had on my husbands birthday which made it extra special. The staff even blew our balloons with helium and decorated the table for us.

The hotel has a lovely relaxed atmosphere too and there are comfortable lounges as well as the bar area where you can sit and take in the views. It’s location is ideal for visiting Bowness, Kendal and Grasmere as well as great walks nearby. Would recommend the Coffin Trail.

The 3 night deal included bed and breakfast, an evening meal up to the value of £55 per person each night and a bottle of Prosecco in your room. Certainly great value and if you’re thinking of booking, don’t hesitate, you won’t be disappointed.

We hopefully will return next year.

Thank you to all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable.

Room tip: If you want a lake view then you pay £60 extra but our friends room was bigger than ours, just as nice but without the views.

An excellent break - wonderful location, and first class rooms, staff and food. The latter being outstanding in quality and presentation. Very convenient for boats and buses - we did not use the car for 4 days.

Room tip: On the front with Lake views

Hard to call a fault with Merewood. Beautiful old building set back up the hill to enjoy the lovely views. Although our room was at the rear, spacious and comfortable, it didn’t spoil our chilled stay at all….we did have a jealous peek at the rooms with the lake views! The hotel was spotlessly clean, common rooms were comfortable and the food was excellent . Weather was good to us as well enabling us to sit down with a drink at the outside tables looking across at the lake and fells. Only moan was the local real ale tap and another beer being unavailable during our visit. However, deserves a five star review. Final comment - all the staff (and we spoke to a good few) were welcoming and helpful. Don’t say this often but will definitely return.

Spent two nights at The Merewood Country House Hotel. My only criticism is that the lake views were limited from the ground floor, however, without cutting down swathes of trees I'm not sure they could fix that ! They fixed everything else though. Note: our room faced the back so I'm not sure what the views are like from the bedrooms facing the Lake. The location is perfect to explore the area from. Other than that, our rooms were very clean and well maintained. It was on the newer extension and so up to separate lots of stairs. A lift would have been handy but probably not in keeping with the style of the hotel. Where the hotel really came into it's own was the quality of it's food offer and staff. The restaurant rooms are very old fashioned function rooms. We booked The Grill for the first night and had starters (Caesar Salads) and Mains (Haddock and Chips and The Burger). The starters are large and the Fish and Chips was massive but beautifully cooked, so absolutely full with no room for desserts. The following night the Tasting Menu was also very good and beautifully presented. Breakfast is a typical buffet offer with speciality egg dishes on request, but sets you up for a day of walking perfectly. The staff couldn't do enough and were polite, chatty, informative and most helpful. Would certainly return.

Room tip: Pay extra and take a Lake facing room.

We stayed here for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Merewood is a lovely country house with fantastic views across to the hills and Lake Windermere at the front. There was a good choice of breakfast items with the useful option of either buffet or made to order (the Merewood yoghurt pot with raspberries is particularly good). The bed in our room was very comfortable and spacious. What I particularly like about this hotel is the fact that it is dog-friendly as opposed to some places which advertise as dog-friendly but turn out to be merely dog-tolerant. We had two dogs with us and were provided with bowls, poo bags and a large supply of dog biscuits in our room. We were able to keep our dogs with us at breakfast and whilst dining in the evening as, although dogs are not permitted in the restaurant, places were set for us in either the library or the drawing room (both very comfortable and with lovely views). Guests travelling with dogs and those without are equally accommodated. All the hotel team members were polite, helpful and friendly. We had not stayed here before but we would certainly like to stay again.
